Sebuah bintang seperti matahari mempunyai bahan bakar yang cukup untuk menghidupi dirinya
hingga 10 milyar tahun. Lalu apa yang terjadi jika bahan bakarnya habis? karena reaksi fusi berlangsung pada pusat bintang maka pusat bintang tersebut akan mengandung banyak sisa hasil pembakaran nuklirnya yang berupa helium. Gas helium membutuhkan suhu dan tekanan lebih tinggi dari hidrogen agar dapat menjalankan reaksi fusi nuklir. Karena itu suatu bintang akan menghasilkan energi nuklir yang jumlahnya semakin sedikit sehingga ia pun mulai runtuh, keruntuhan ini akan menaikkan suhu sampai partikel-partikel gas yang bergerak dengan sangat cepat dapat menyulut reaksi fusi nuklir baru yang melibatkan siklus karbon. Reaksi nuklir hidrogen ini pada mulanya terjadi pada sebuah lapisan tipis disekitar inti bintang. Panas yang terhasilkan akan terus meningkat sehingga menyebabkan lapisan bagian luar dari bintang tersebut mengembang sehingga jari-jarinya mencapai ribuan kali dari ukuran aslinya. Karena energi total yang dihasilkan bintang sekarang harus tersebar ke luas permukaan yang lebih besar, maka permukaan bintang raksasa ini suhunya lebih dingin, sehingga tampak lebih merah (bintang raksasa merah). Perubahan matahari menjadi bintang raksasa merah kelak akan dapat memanggang planet bumi. Lalu kemanakah bangsa manusia saat itu? karena hal itu diperkirakan akan terjadi 5 milyar tahun lagi, maka mungkin sekali saat itu bangsa manusia telah menjadi lebih bijak dan punya kemampuan teknologi untuk berkelana antar galaksi guna menjaga kelangsungan hidupnya.

 


Setelah bintang tersebut menjadi bintang raksasa merah, lalu apa yang terjadi dengan inti bintang tersebut? inti bintang akan terus runtuh menjadi semakin padat dan massif seiring terhasilkan lebih banyak unsur helium dari pembakaran unsur hidrogen yang terjadi. Dengan semakin bertambahnya tekanan, elektron yang ada juga semakin mendekat satu sama lain. Namun prinsip eksklusi pauli tidak memperkenankan dua buah elekron dengan bilangan kuantum yang sama untuk menempati tempat yang sama. Karena ruang gerak elektron yang semakin sempit dan terbatas, maka elektron tersebut akan semakin berdekatan satu sama lainnya. Sehingga menurut prinsip tersebut, partikel-partikel harus memiliki kecepatan yang sangat berbeda. Seiring dengan tekanan yang semakin bertambah, ruang gerak elektron semakin terbatas sehingga kecepatannya semakin berlainan satu sama lain (kelajuan relatifnya semakin besar).
