The new horse in town

The new horse in town

There is a new thing available from the items shop over at Blizzards. Several bloggers have already voiced their opinion some of them outraged in general, some not bothered, some worried about the direction the item shop will take in general and so on and so forth.

Who am I to resist the temptation to join in on such a hotly debated subject?

So lets first get those facts out of the way thatll only impact the serious statements to follow. I queued (in an online shop, for a virtual item that wont ever make any impact on my real life) for several hours (started the queue at roughly 55.000 people waiting). I got two of them horseys for a total value of 40 - one for my wife and one for myself.

And personally even though they only look okay in flight and quite meh on the ground, I already know Ill love them.

See I do run with quite many alts. My main (thats the Koch person I keep boasting about) has collected a ton of flying mounts (including a rather lovely, but slow, blue dragonhawk). On my alts I usually practise an as few as necessary approach to mounts which used to be limited to two one slow riding, one slow flying. Now, with the earlier available riding skill training, I end up owning three on all my alts. Slow ground at 20, fast ground at 40, slow flying at 60, northrend flying at 68 and thats it. I still refuse to buy epic flying for all of them the alts intended to stay gatherers get it and so do the ones I really like. If an alt has not entirely convinced my by the time we get to 70, they dont get an epic flappy.

Okay, I admit it all of them except for the shaman have it by now. I bought 9 times epic flying. And it just cuts down on the frustration factor of levelling, so shush.

Anyway... back to the flying horse.

This one will upgrade itself. I wont have to worry about replacing icons on the quickbar, I wont have to bother finding one of the classic styles that suit me its perfect. Lowest effort required. And even though the total savings are now extremely low (as compared to 2006, when an epic mount was expensive and the training dirt cheap), its still a few shiny golds Ill never have to spend again.

More importantly, though, is a piece of coding that makes me jump with joy. The new horsey can go at 310% speed if the owner has at least one 310% speed mount of their own. So itll be very fast and its possible to do it.

Now my campaign for the speeding up of the blue dragonhawk can finally start in earnest. And I think I know at least one other person who would be interested.

Final note: Technically you get two mounts. I dont own one of the Headless Horsemans Horses, but I presume the behaviour is the same. The same buttons summons both a ground mount (if you are in the old world, in Northrend without cold weather flying, in Wintergrasp during a battle or in Dalaran) and a flying mount (in the Outlands, in Northrend with cold weather flying, in Wintergrasp when no battle is on and on the Dalaran landing pad and the balcony). Be careful, though, your mount does not change its abilities when you move from a non-flying into a flying area on its own. You will need to dismount and remount.

No problem usually, but try this: mount up in front of the Dalaran bank, ride through the sewers to the sewer exit and gracefully jump out of the sewer exit.

See that ground rushing towards you? And the wings of your horse not spreading out and flapping?

This is where you wish your horse could have flown .... and look, it seems I was not the only one...

The Game Tips And More Realism Texture Pack for Minecraft Work In Progress

The Game Tips And More Realism Texture Pack for Minecraft Work In Progress

I have been having a lot of fun lately with the easy-to-get-into, simple-yet-vast gameplay of Minecraft. After getting used to the graphics, which are great in their own pixellated 1980s way, I have been going about messing with the textures just for fun:

Examples of the work-in-progress textures, showing wood/bark, sand, a tree stump, topsoil with grass, soil and bricks, while holding green wool. Click to see image full size.

The game itself is simple in execution but very addicting to many aspects of human nature. I plan to cover these in a First Impressions of the game in the future, with a video and screenshots galore. I realize there are already a generation of kids who will have bad eyesight sooner in life because of this game, but after playing the PCGamer Demo and then purchasing the game, I realize that it will be worth it.
(Note to Marketing Departments: This is how you do an addicting Demo, fully-functional, limited only by Time)

I just wanted to share that I was starting my own Photo-Realistic Texture Pack, learning the cropping, blending, cloning, tiling, color correction, sizing and all the other aspects that go along with importing it into the game and will have it available for Download to anyone that wishes to try it out/use it/play it here in the future.

See you in the games!

The Infamous battery re calibration bug in Lenovo Thinkpad

The Infamous battery re calibration bug in Lenovo Thinkpad

My brand new Lenovo Thinkpad is a beast and is supposed to give up to 8hrs of battery backup. But there was a weird problem. As soon as the battery remaining reached 30%, it used to drop to 6% in a second. When I looked up on google, I found out that I was not the only one facing this problem. Most of them suggested that my battery was shot and that I had to buy a new one. This is highly improbable as it is brand new. I wanted to give fixing it a try before contacting customer care. And I was successful!

Before - See the battery percentage drop from 30% to 6%

For some reason, I suspected that it was somehow TLPs fault. TLP is the best power management utility for Thinkpad in Linux. It allows you to set max charging threshold so that you will be able to connect your laptop to the plug point without worrying about over charging (among many other features it provides). I felt that it is because of this, battery calibration was getting screwed up. So I set the maximum threshold to 100%.

Open /etc/default/tlp and set following variables.

START_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0=100
STOP_CHARGE_THRESH_BAT0=100

Then I restarted my laptop to bring this to effect. As the calibration was already offset by a great extent, the only way to fix it was to keep it charged for a long time. I kept it charging for almost a day.

After - Fixed!
Then to test it I kept discharging it. And to my surprise, it didnt drop from 30% to 6% this time!!
So the problem was with calibration and not because the battery is broken. If you face this problem, you can try this solution once before you spend $$$ on buying a new battery.

Now that I have changed the battery threshold back to 85%, if this problem occurs again, all I have to do is follow the above steps.

The Top 10 Video Game Related Things People In The Past Wouldnt Believe

The Top 10 Video Game Related Things People In The Past Wouldnt Believe

So, theres a theory. If someone could in fact time travel to the past, would their actions truly change the future? Theres a few possible answers to this, but lets take this route -- theyll only change the future if what they do in the past leaves a big enough impact. So, what does this mean? Well exactly what it sounds like. If someone were to travel into the past and do something major, itll have some sort of noticeable change on the future; however, if they were to travel into the past and no one cared about what they did, it would be so small of a change that it wouldnt even matter. So, how does this apply to video games? Simply look at all thats happened in the industry, and youll see what Im getting at.

This list is the top 10 things a time traveler could tell someone in the past, without changing our current future because no one would believe them (at that time). Before I begin this list however, Id like to remind all of you one thing... This list was originally written in December of 2016, and because of that it will not include whatever major video game events that will happen after this point. Of course even if someone from the future told me some of these things that are going to happen, I doubt Id believe them... Thus leaving room for a possible second list... And on that note, lets get started.

1. The Graphics of the Future:

Okay, to kick this one off lets get the most basic one out of the way...

Imagine you have just traveled back in time to the days of the Atari 2600, and you decide to tell everyone what the games of the future look like. How are you going to do it? Do you really think youd be able to convince the world that video games will one day look BETTER than even their top Hollywood movies? Yeah, good luck with that. Pretty good chance youll be ignored, and your crazy rantings of the future will be forgotten.

Sure, the Atari wasnt the first game console to hit the market, nor did it have the most advanced games of their time (as arcades existed), but this was what most house holds had back then, and its what they were used to seeing. Even those who worked in the field of game design would most likely have a hard time believing your claims, as the technology to create something like that was just unheard of. Maybe someone out there might believe you, but unless you bring back physical proof that youre a time traveler, even they might see what youre saying as just a dream.

Either way, whatever you try to tell these people about future graphics, youre not going to change the way time progresses, and youll most likely be forgotten. So, the only thing you can do now is move on to your next stop.

2. How Big the Game Industry Will Become:

After trying to convince the early gamers of the Atari era that graphics will advance into something they could never imagine, you decide to head to the early 1990s. In this time period a lot has already happened with games, and the general publics feelings are pretty mixed. In their life time they got to see the video game industry rise, they got to see it completely crash and burn, and they saw this new Japanese company "Nintendo" rise up and bring it all back with the release of the NES. So, youd think it would be easy to convince people that games are here to stay, and that the industry will continue to advance and grow, right? Wrong.

It may sound funny to be hearing this now, but in the early 90s a lot of people, mainly parents, didnt like the idea of having new game consoles. They bought the NES, they saw this "SEGA thing," and now Nintendo was trying to make them buy yet another console called the SNES. Needless to say, these things werent cheap back then, and its understandable that parents wouldnt want to have to keep buying new consoles... But to call the entire industry a scam? Thats pushing it a bit far.

Using your own "time machine" in the form of online videos, you can see this for yourself in the form of interviews. In the 90s a lot of parents actually thought video games was just a scam, and that companies were only releasing new consoles to make more money. In their eyes, hardware didnt need to advance, and that games could continue being made for what they already had (the NES). Meanwhile others just saw the whole thing as another passing craze, and they felt it wasnt worth spending money on. To all of these people, video games were just a dumb kids thing, and they would never go anywhere... So, how are you going to convince them that they are wrong?

The industry back then is completely different from what we see now. What was once just a small form of entertainment, is now one of the largest in the world and it continues to grow. It has become a major part of this world that we live in, and even non gamers are invested in it. From mobile and social games, to indie developers following their dreams, to large AAA $1,000,000 budget titles, games have evolved into something much bigger, and they are in fact here to stay. So, again, how are you going to convince these people of this? Pretty good chance youll be laughed at, and be accused of being involved with the "scam" personally. Them video games... Just a waste of time and money. Never gonna go anywhere.

3. The Digital Future:

Up until the 2000s, digital gaming wasnt really much of a thing. Yes there were PC games you could download, and there were some failed console ideas in the past, but in general digital just wasnt an option. Video games were released as hard copies on disc, and you would either go out to the store and buy them, or rent them from your local rental place. Thats the way things were, and how things continued for a very long time. Then consoles like the Xbox, PSP, PS3, and Wii hit store shelves, and the whole PC digital download thing hit all gamers everywhere. While it did take some time for each of these consoles to get to the point where you could download full games of almost any kind (as Xbox had Live Arcade, and Wii used the virtual console for older games), they did eventually get there, and some gamers today actually prefer going full digital. This is the age we live in, but its something that our past selves would have had a hard time understanding. How would you convince others that one day nearly all of the games in the world would be up for download on a server somewhere, and that all you had to do was use a credit card (or point card) to buy and download them to your gaming console -- which now also had a built in HDD just like a PC. This sort of think was unthinkable in the early generations, and even those who did pull off something similar (Sega Channel for example) it was clearly very limited and nothing like what we have today. For the people of that time, this new digital age is a whole new world, and even if some were to believe your stories, they would never truly fully understand how things have progressed.

4. Mario & Sonic Together:

Staying around the same time period, youll find yourself caught up in the whole "SEGA does what NintenDONT" console war. Nintendo fans calling their NES (and later SNES) the better console, SEGA fans going on and on about blast processing, and both companies taking constant jabs at each other. This is what it was like back then, and its how things would continue for a very long time. Now, how about we tell the fans about Mario & Sonic? Think anyone will buy it? Yeaaaaah, no.

Sonic games being released on a Nintendo console isnt much of a shock in todays world, but up until the Dream Cast was dying out, it was just flat out unheard of. Nintendo and SEGA were huge rivals, they had their own exclusive games, and there was no way that Mario or Sonic would switch console sides -- its just how things were. When the DC did die however, it wasnt as big of a shock to start seeing games like Sonic Adventure 2 being ported to the Nintendo GameCube (still something fans would have never expected in the 90s), but a crossover itself still seemed unlikely. Then, it happened, and it wasnt anything like we expected. Not only did we get a game where Mario & Sonic were together, it was an official Olympics video game, and it was something that would turn into a series all its own. Can you honestly say you ever saw this one coming? I think not. Even if you came across a leak a day before it was announced it would have been hard to believe, but it was true! And here we are today.

Now, going back to the 90s... How are you going to handle this one? Are you going to go up to every Nintendo fan and tell them that Sonic would one day be on their console? Or are you going over to the SEGA fans and let them know their beloved Genesis would one day span multiple follow ups that were fated to fail? Even if you just flat out told everyone about Mario & Sonic at the Olympic games without saying what console it was on, youd most likely just be made fun of... Again... You would be seen as one of those rare kids who owned both consoles, and had dreams of a future that would never be. Or youd just be called crazy. Yeah, crazy works.

5. Nintendo Creates Their Biggest (new) Rival:

Might not seem like much of anything now, but again, youre in the 90s.

Back when Nintendo and SEGA were still going at it, other companies tried to enter the fray, and constantly failed. Nothing out there could really beat the "big two," and things didnt seem like they were going to change. This was when Nintendo decided that it was time to advance their own technology by switching from cart based games to CD ROMs. For this new hardware, Nintendo originally teamed up with the Japanese company Sony for what was going to be known as the "Nintendo PlayStation" -- a SNES with a built in CD Drive. Well, long story short, things happened... Sony wanted the rights to Nintendos IPs, Nintendo didnt like it, Sony thought their deal was still on, Nintendo went behind their back and teamed up with Philips instead. This event is what lead Sony to take matters into their own hands, and create a game console all their own.

So, why wouldnt you be able to convince people of this in the past? Well, just look at that story. How likely is it that Nintendo would bring another company into the market, and how likely was it for them to actually succeed when so many others failed? Looking back on it, its actually pretty shocking things became the way they are now. Seriously, who is even going to buy into the idea that this "PlayStation" console would ever be created, yet alone out sell the Nintendo one day? (Wii U vs PS4.) Even if you ran around telling Nintendo or Sony about the deal, its very unlikely that they would listen to you and history would continue as normal.

6. The Power of Handhelds and Mobile Phones:

Jumping ahead to the end of the 90s, gaming has advanced quite a bit. Games are now fully 3D, CD ROMs are now common, arcade games are getting more and more advanced, handheld gaming devices are now true gaming devices (and not just Tiger Games), and even mobile phones are getting simple games like "Snake." Things are looking pretty good, but yet still so far from what we have now.

When walking into an arcade in 1999 you could possibly spot two things. One, the arcade "racer" titled "Crazy Taxi," and two, someone playing Crazy Taxi who owns a basic cell phone. How do you think they would react if you told them they could just play Crazy Taxi on their own instead? Yep, impossible. It would take a lot to convince someone that a full 3D game with "realistic graphics" like Crazy Taxi could be playable on a mobile phone, but guess what? Its true. In todays world we have Crazy Taxi, we have Pac-Man, we have the PS2 classics like Grand Theft Auto, and we even have games that come close to todays console quality. Sure we arent quite there yet, but with handhelds like the PlayStation Vita, and the upcoming Nintendo Switch console, we just keep getting closer and closer. This isnt something someone in the late 90s would believe though. To them a cell phone was just a phone, and anything extra was an unlikely bonus. Snake wasnt on every phone out there, and unless you lived in Japan where things started to evolve into the smart phones we know today, they didnt have much use outside of simple calling... And maybe a note pad. Yeah, youre not convincing anyone with your stories of gaming on your phone.

7. Square and Disney Teaming Up:

So, Disney has always been pretty big, and it still is. We love the classic movies, theyve released multiple successful shows, and then theres the whole Disney Land and World thing. Needless to say, this is a company that isnt going anywhere anytime soon, and they will continue to grow (heck, they even own Marvel and Star Wars now). But in the early 2000s they did something no one would have expected -- they teamed up with Square-Enix to release a brand new JRPG.

Now days Kingdom Hearts isnt a shock. Its a massive franchise that also continues to grow, and it looks like itll be around for many more years to come. Even with the completion of the current story arc (which is said to come to an end in Kingdom Hearts III), more is planned for the future. But what if you traveled back in time to a period Pre-KH? Do you really think you can convince others that this crossover will one day happen? I mean, come on. What does a series a company like Square, and a series like Final Fantasy have in common with Disney? They didnt own Star Wars yet so you couldnt use that as an excuse... Oh wait, in Japan they share an office. Even so, whats the chances of a... chance... meeting on an elevator that will spark such a strange, yet epic, series? Well, that is what happened, but its very unlikely that as a time traveler you could convince those in the past that itll one day exist. Even if you brought back proof, most will assume you faked it. This is just one of those rare games that no one would have ever thought would happen, but it somehow did.

8. MEGAMAN IS DEAD (Sort of):

Oh Mega Man Legends 3. Remember when this project was announced and how excited everyone was? Well, it was a big deal. After Mega Man Legends 2 ended in a cliff hanger roughly 10 years before it, Legends 3 was something MANY fans had been waiting for. There really seemed to be little to no hope of this project ever happening, but when it was officially announced fans went nuts. Finally the game of their dreams was on its way, and to top it all off it was coming to the brand new Nintendo 3DS. The project showed a lot of promise from the get go, but Capcom actually took all of that a step further.

The Dev Room was a special community within Capcom-Unity, and it was seen as a new way to develop games. Rather than making the game on their own, Capcom decided to let fans get in on the action. Each of us got assigned Servbot numbers, forums were set up where you could submit ideas for the game, and special events were held where our own user created content would have a chance appearing in the game (in fact, my boss idea was one of the final few that made it to Capcoms desk -- only to lose in the end... Poor mecha duck...). The Dev Room alone brought life back to Capcom-Unity, and it brought together so many Mega Man fans that it was actually pretty amazing to see. The late night chats on the IRC channel, the thousands upon thousands of discussion topics popping up all across the site -- it was all so crazy, and unless you personally a part of it, theres no way you could possibly understand just how great this truly was. So, during all of this excitement and chaos, how would a time traveler break the news of Mega Man Legends 3 being canceled, and the Mega Man series "dying" along with it? Yep, no way.

The thing is, the cancellation of Legends 3 was leaked a few days before the official announcement. Originally the plan was to release a paid for demo on the new Nintendo 3DS eShop, and then based upon the sales they would see if the game was worth putting into full development. We all knew there was a small chance that this game wouldnt be made, but after all of the events, and everything Capcom had done over the last year, it was almost guaranteed that the game would be made! So, imagine our surprise when the eShop launched, and Capcom didnt release that demo... Instead the Japanese site seemingly closed down, and rumors of the games cancellation spread. Of course no one believed it. Even with pretty solid proof, no one would admit that the game was history. Not until that fate full blog post that is...

So yeah, this is really one piece of news a time traveler couldnt ruin. Especially during during the all time high of the Dev Rooms activity.

(Note: At this moment in time Mega Man is "dead," but it isnt fully gone. Mega Man has since appeared in Super Smash Bros, new comics have been released, a Mega Man X novel is in the works, X is appearing in the upcoming Marvel vs Capcom game, and Capcom promises to bring the series back at some point in game form. Even so, its been a long time since the release of the last Mega Man game, and for a series that used to release games basically every year... It is quite sad to see.)

9. Konami and Metal Gear Solid:

Man... Remember when Metal Gear Solid V was officially announced? This was THE game people. Up until then, the Metal Gear series was one of the kings of the game industry. It revolutionized what gaming used to be back when the first Metal Gear came out, and it continued to grow and expand changing how stories were told in games as well. Just about every release became an instant classic, and although not all fans agreed with every decision (looking at you MGS2), there was no denying that it was one of the greats that every gamer should at least try once. As for the man behind it? Not only did he prove that an underdog could rise up to become an industry great, but Kojima surpassed everyones expectations and became an icon within the industry. He really was (and still is) someone special, and we still look forward to his games even today... But thats besides the point.

Look, Im not saying that I agree with everything he does, nor do I like everything hes been a part of. Hes not actually some king or anything, but theres no denying that he has accomplished some great things, and many fans expect a lot out of him when he releases said games. So when Metal Gear Solid V was announced, its understandable why everyone got so excited. It was Metal Gear Solid, with Big Boss, in an open world, with what looked to be an amazing story. It was a series with no real end in sight, and everyone was excited to see what was coming next... So, time traveler, what are you going to tell these people?

Putting aside all feelings on how MGSV actually turned out, lets talk about what happened. To put it simply, Konami, the company Kojima works for, hates Kojima. They stripped his name from the front of the games cover, they locked him in a room on a different floor of the building, they didnt allow him to speak to his team, and to direct the game he was forced to send messages through someone else. How do you make a game like that? Well, I guess you technically dont. While Kojima was able to guide his team to "complete" the game, it really appears to be a shell of what it was meant to be. The game engine is solid, the gameplay mechanics are great, and the things you can do in this world are actually pretty amazing (for example, you can use a sniper to take out power lines to cut power to a base). Theres a lot to MGSV, and it still has an interesting story overall, but its clear that this game isnt what it was actually meant to be. Most of the story is told through radio conversations, theres not many actual cutscenes to be seen, theres only a handful of main story missions, and a large chunk of the game is made up of repetitive side missions that cause you to revisit the same areas over and over again. Its a shame to see the game get so cut back, but its also pretty crazy to think that it even got finished in the first place with the sort of working conditions this team was put under.

If you were to travel back, youre not going to be able to convince people that this will one day happen. You could try going back to any point before the announcement of MGSV, and no one would ever believe that Konami would do something like that to him -- one of their star staff members. On the other hand, you could travel to any point after the announcement of MGSV, and those same people will still not believe it, nor will they believe that the game will end up being rushed and "unfinished." Both things were just so very unlikely, that even when the rumors began popping up we didnt believe them. Its still hard to believe actually, but whats done is done, and Kojima has moved on to bigger (and hopefully better) things.

10. Mighty No 9:

Mega Man is "dead." As mentioned above, were currently in a period of time where Mega Man games just dont happen. We here promises of more to come, but we have yet to actually see this. Thats when Inafune, the "father" of Mega Man decided to step back into the picture and do something of his own. I still remember it just like yesterday. Getting home after working at my familys bakery, getting on Skype to see my friends freaking out over some new Kickstarter project, and that image of a strange little robot popping up along side Inafunes name. A brand new action platformer, made in the style of the classic Mega Man games. It. Looked. AMAZING! Finally Mega Man was "back" but in a new form! Inafune was back at it again, and I personally couldnt wait to see where this project went! The hype was real, and that concept video they released was outstanding. Both Inafune and Inti made great games in the past, they were reviving a series I loved, and the future looked bright. Seriously, there was no way this game could fail as it was everything fans were asking for. Yep, it was going to be great. Oh, youre saying that this isnt true? Yeah right! Like you know the future or something? You really expect me to believe this game is going to fail? Ha ha, good luck making anyone buy that stupid story! Go cry like an anime fan on prom night.

The sad reality of this project is, it was nothing like we expected. Putting aside the bad (and offensive) advertising, there were many other problems with this games development, and we were mislead in so many different ways. First of all, one of the Kickstarter goals mentioned how it would include two extra levels. The game was called Mighty No. 9, and we knew that the other 8 mighty robots were going to be the bad guys, but what we DIDNT know was that those "two extra levels" were actually might no 7 and 8 (if you believe Inafune that is). No where did they mention only having 6 of the 8 bosses in the original plans (why even have them if they didnt plan on using them?), and when we reached the goal they passed it off as fact. Second of all, the milestone that would add Call as a playable character, also didnt really deliver on its promise. Call was only playable for a single puzzle level, and in a mini co-op mode (which was also a let down compared to what they made it seem like). Thats it. These are just two of the misleading things to come out of this game, with one of the major ones being that teaser that was developed in "two weeks" that ended up looking a lot better than the final product itself. Sadly, things get even worse from there...

Although the project received millions of dollars worth of funding, Inafune chose to use the outdated Unreal 3 engine rather than the newer Unreal 4 (which was actually pretty cheap at the time, and is now free for use in todays world), which caused the game to suffer multiple technical issues. Because of these issues the game was hit with delay after delay after delay, and even the finish product suffered from technical problems across multiple platforms. Despite not looking anywhere near as good as it did in the teaser, the game still suffered from framerate drops, freezing, glitches, etc, and things only got worse when playing on weaker consoles like the Nintendo Wii U. Sadly Mighty No. 9 couldnt deliver on what was promised all those years ago, and its uninspiring stages and bosses really didnt help much.

Now let me make this clear, Im not actually hating on the game. I actually gave the game an "okay" review. The game can still be fun, and it might still be worth checking out due to its low price point, but theres no denying that it isnt the game we were promised back when its Kickstarter launched. Because of this, MN9 is one of the biggest let downs of 2016, and most will have a hard time forgiving it for its low, million dollar, production value. Unless you were one of those who were really looking forward to this game, theres no real way to describe just how big of a let down this game was, and even those who liked it can still see it doesnt live up to what it should have been. Sure, you can say its "better than nothing" (which, was a translation error people) and enjoy it for what it is, but there will be those who cant and will always hate it for that... Go back to 2013 though, and youll never convince the masses otherwise. To them, MN9 is the Mega Man game theyve waited years for, and its release date cant come soon enough.

The future is a funny thing. One minute you think you know what to expect, but then everything gets flipped upside down and nothing is as it "should be." As with life in general, this will also always be the case with video games, and even if we were to travel back in time we couldnt change that. There are things people will just never believe about the future, until its right in front of their face. But maybe its better that way. The things that happen to us in life, and the events we live through are what makes us who we are today, and going back in time to change that would be like undoing how far youve come. When it comes to games, maybe its better for our past selves to not know as well. Back then, at each of these moments, we got to live in and enjoy our own fantasies. We got to look forward to games like Metal Gear Solid V, and Mighty No 9, unaware of their rocky releases, and back before games really took off we got to dream about what things would one day be like. Going back to tell ourselves, and others, about the future would just be spoiling the fun. It would be better to just let everyone see for themselves whats to come, and enjoy the ride along the way. (Not that anyone would believe you if you were a time traveler.)

Comment: it is not surprise at all I have been fascinated with the aesthetics of The Hathaway Family Plot for a while because every step by a Buffalo, US-based artist called Kevin McFadden is worth to be parsed and thought off. It is interesting and intriguing. In comparison to his previous albums he used to incorporate new elements and axial aspects to the mix and making it in the way to change the paradigm being set out by him previously. The current 14-notch issue is overwhelmed by stomping noises, designed deranged noise sculptures (Dymaxion; Not Gonna Leave), gentle yet uncanny improvisations of having neither time nor space and some mutilated vocal lines and if to compare it to the artist previous issue Having No Alternative it is more inclined to be a successor of No Wave music and the aesthetic of beatniks. Its purpose is to to be set free from oppressive conventions and annoying traditions being an effect of a society of having no future and certain plan to transcend recent economic and survival understanding. At least it seems so while Kevin McFadden likes to manipulate with it and finally destroy it by deconstructing it into something new and challenging. Indeed, one part of the whole it is made up of thought-provoking sounds but the rest of it reveals a huge emotional impact on ones weary sensations and resigned soul. It can be concluded it is ultimately a positive plan to be set out for the sake of all of us. Indeed, by listening to the whole I can imagine it as if a sonic counterpoint of a beatnik text being converted into. But it does not mean the artist dislikes silent moments. For instance, Elegy for Thomas Kincaid The Younger (1661-1726) is a sublime number of a droning organ and a dense harmonica (?). However, The Locks reminds of the art of Robert Wyatt. In general, Mechanics In The Age Of Artistic Reproduction is a fine outing which is a chapter along the path paved by Kevin McFadden. Alarms are up there everywhere but we need more and more surprises to cope with them. Digital simulacra and the simulacra of real life are just nugatory objects to deceive himself/herself thoroughly. It is not the solution at all.

The role of relaxation in consumer behavior

The role of relaxation in consumer behavior

States of relaxation consistently increase the monetary valuations of products, actually inflating these valuations by about 10 percent.

This phenomenon is demonstrated in six experiments involving two different methods of inducing relaxation, a large number of products of different types, and various methods of assessing monetary valuation.

In all six experiments, participants who were put into a relaxed affective state reported higher monetary valuations than participants who were put into an equally pleasant but less relaxed state.

The Reality of Playing Persona 5 In Japanese When Youre Not Fluent

The Reality of Playing Persona 5 In Japanese When Youre Not Fluent

Its not an easy time to be a spoiler-sensitive Persona fan. If youre wanting to go into Persona 5 in February with a clear head, there are hashtags, wikis and preview videos to actively avoid (seriously, avoid the wikis!). My initial plan was to be part of the spoiler-free crowd, but when Final Fantasy XV was delayed I decided to give into my Persona 5 impatience and bear the spoilers in order to fill my September gaming void and play a great game. But as someone only studying Japanese rather than fluent in the language, I was quickly reminded that Persona isnt a light JRPG. I found Persona 5s story getting hazier as I spent my time focusing on merely getting through Persona 5 rather than fully and easily experiencing it like I normally would in English. At its core, buying Persona 5 before release may seem like a good idea, but if youre like me and love Personas story, getting it in Japanese when youre not fluent wont give you the same experience the English release.

Its not a complete uphill battle to play Persona 5 in Japanese though. If youve played a Persona game or two, you can probably work how to play Persona 5 at the very least. Same as the other main series Persona games, gameplay is similar enough between each edition that its pretty easy to work out how to play one Persona game if youve played another. Its the same with Persona 5, with the added bonus of it being polite enough to put some of the basic battle controls and main menu interface in English. For dialogue heavy moments, because Persona 5 is such a visual improvement on pre-current gen Persona games, its easier to get context from the visuals making Persona 5 a bit easier for international players. If missing plot intricacies doesnt bother you, mechanical knowledge of Persona and some button mashing through new mechanics is most likely enough to at least get to the end of Persona 5. This is how I played through the first dungeon of Persona 5 and despite wanting to understand more of the story, I was able to have a lot of fun with the battle mechanics and understand just enough of the story for it to be interesting. Dungeons were probably the most stress free part of my dictionary-free run because of the battles and animated cutscenes, so if youre importing this aspect wont be too much of a problem and theyre a good way to have fun with Persona 5.

My Japanese is....(see above)
If Persona 5 was all dungeon crawler and no dialogue, it wouldnt pose as much of a problem to the non-Japanese speaking player. However a lot of Personas core is narrative, with some of the series best and most unique mechanics including Social Links and the new Demon Negotiation using dialogue as an important game mechanic. A lot can be gathered from visual cues, however with Personas characters always having well-rounded personalities and long dialogue scenes, its easy to miss important plot intricacies with little or no Japanese knowledge. With my lower level Japanese, I could gather a few of these intricacies but I did find when speaking to my boyfriend (who is much better at Japanese), there were still a lot of things I missed. I didnt fully understand just how evil the antagonists were because of what I missed in the dialogue and there were developments I really wish I had been able to understand for myself. Its to be expected since Im not fluent in Japanese, but Persona is so largely story-based that I couldnt help but feel like I was missing really important things. Social links are another beast, as I found myself matching words or kanji I knew in dialogue choices when I dont understand whats going on, with mixed success. By the beginning of Persona 5s second dungeon, I found myself pretty nervous as I always wondered if I was missing something important Id been told to do that was vital to the next boss and if Id be sent to game over town because I hadnt been able to understand what to do.

There is hope though. For the patient and for those with an interest in learning Japanese, my trusty picture translator and dictionary method requires me be much more patient, but works in Persona 5. In my new save file, Ive been able to look things up to my hearts content and actually understand whats going on, which makes me feel way happier when I play. It is, however, taking a lot longer; Im not at the first save point yet and its probably been 4 hours in my new save file. But feeling like I know whats going on is important to me, which is what drove me to write this article. Some people wont mind getting a glimpse at Persona 5 without understanding everything, but if you love the details of Personas stories, actually waiting may not be a bad idea for a game like Persona. If you want to understand how truly evil some of the characters are, you may not get that from a bunch of words you cant read and some maniac laughter as much as you think, which is what I found in my first save file. I completely understand the impatience of waiting for such an anticipated and consistently great series, but as I said in my previous article about playing Persona 5 before release, localisations exist because of how much dialogue there is to translate and Persona 5 probably has more than ever.

Playing Persona 5 pre-dictionary was like looking at it through a glass door: I could see the coolness of Persona 5 - the gorgeous visuals, the improved battle system - but I was missing a lot of details and those details are what makes a Persona narrative so hard-hitting. Im going to keep playing Persona 5, but I may abandon my dictionary-free save and take my time learning new words and understanding the story. I cant promise that playing Persona 5 will be cool for people who dont speak Japanese and for those who speak it on a lower level like mine as there will be nuances missed out on unless you approach it with patience. But I also understand for a lot of people, merely playing Persona 5 is what they want and they can live without knowing every detail and I kind of envy that in some ways. No matter when or how you play Persona 5, I encourage everyone as its load screen regularly reminds me to Take Your Time and enjoy the intricate world that is Persona 5 in the way you can have the most fun possible.

You can pre-order Persona 5 for PS3 and PS4 in English or buy the Japanese version at Play-Asia.com!

The speed of love in the human brain 1 5 of a second

The speed of love in the human brain 1 5 of a second

The findings raise the question: "Does the heart fall in love, or the brain?"

"Thats a tricky question always," says Ortigue. "I would say the brain, but the heart is also related because the complex concept of love is formed by both bottom-up and top-down processes from the brain to the heart and vice versa. For instance, activation in some parts of the brain can generate stimulations to the heart, butterflies in the stomach. Some symptoms we sometimes feel as a manifestation of the heart may sometimes be coming from the brain."

Fascinating, so read on...

The Problems of Real World Collaboration in Legal and Financial Industry

The Problems of Real World Collaboration in Legal and Financial Industry

Collaboration is the main buzzword in the computer industry these days and there are offerings from all the major vendors; IBM/Lotus, Microsoft and Google.

Their collaboration bundles have all recently leapt from the desktop into the web 2.0 cloud and seem to be the answer to all our business problems - but are they? I think that the answer is very industry specific.

I have no doubt that collaboration is a boon for the computing industry and I can see how the sharing of code and the discussion of bugs and product features can provide huge benefits. I can see similar benefits for project management in other industries such as mining and manufacturing too.

The benefits for big business, particularly big "distributed" businesses with offices all around the world are obvious but its one thing to look at collaboration within the business. External business-to-business collaboration however is a whole new ballgame. Its what collaboration is really all about. Who doesnt want to seen the benefits of industry-wide collaboration on issues such as government, banking and environmental protection?

I can see some amazing potential benefits in the finance and legal sectors but while the potential is there, the money is there and to a certain extent, the capital investment is there too, collaboration is going nowhere fast.

Ive got a few theories on why this is the case but sadly, no easy solution presents itself. Its not that the tools that are flawed but that the business structures themselves dont lend themselves to a collaborative environment.

A few years back, we spent quite a bit on building better collaboration tools into our systems. Our document database templates were upgraded to include forums; blogs and wikis were introduced and social bookmarking and improved contact management tools were brought online.

Everything went well in test mode where we had some excellent facebook style discussions about non business items but when we went live, the social silence was deafening.

What went wrong?

I dont think that we can pin the problems down to a single cause but there are several very obvious contributing factors;

Writing Style
The Web 2.0 requires a certain "aggressive" writing style. In order to facilitate discussion you cant simply sit on the fence in an arguement but have to take one side or the other. That way people can either agree or disagree with you. In essence, this is the whole point of the "like/unlike" facilities which are so popular in the facebook and google worlds. Even if someone has nothing to say, at least they can indicate support by simply clicking a link.

This is quite different from the normal rules of engagement for business where you need to tread carefully so as not to scare off potential customers or attract lawsuits.

Our writing teams were still writing to a static audiences. Their messages took the form of announcements rather than debates and no feedback was encouraged. Personally, I dont feel that the same team should be running both your corporate announcements and your web 2.0 interaction. Its more than just retraining, its a matter of perspective.

Legal Obligations
Then theres the legal issues which abound in discussions between companies. Unlike Facebook where the worst that can happen is that someone "unfriends" you for saying the wrong thing, business discussions which stray off-topic can result in people getting fired or sued. Everything needs to be traceable and every step is like walking on eggshells. Sometimes its simpler just to keep quiet.

Hierarchy
Its a funny thing but I often find that many of the best "immediate fixes" for business issues are already known at the bottom of the food chain - even when the problems arent fully understood by the top people. Its a fact of life that those closest to the work are usually more likely to appreciate the day-to-day processing problems than management. The workers tend to think about these problems more and it shouldnt be surprising that they quickly find solutions - even if they dont always consider the big picture.

For some reason, management often has issues with the "bottom-up" approach. They feel that it makes them look less competent and they often try to suppress work-discussions between "little people". They need to maintain their hierarchy. In the world of meetings, this works well. The operations team have "team" meetings, the supervisory teams take the best ideas to the supervisor meetings, again the best ideas transfer to management meetings and so on, up to the board meeting.

Except of course, that it only takes one link in the chain of management to either dislike an idea or fail to understand it and the whole improvement process breaks down. The idea becomes lost.

One of the problems(?) with todays social networks is that they dont maintain these hierarchies. A "little-person" is just as capable of posting their thoughts on an issue as a member of upper management. Even worse, if their place in the hierarchy isnt understood by all the readers, their suggestions may even be listened to.

For this reason, managers and supervisors who feel threatened by this behaviour often try to block access to these systems. Often inappropriate use of company time and resources is cited. The result; the voices with the knowledge are removed from the system and theres little for the management teams to discuss.

Head Hunting
One last problem that weve encountered is head hunting. Unlike traditional systems where employees speak through management and the sources are obscured, inter-company collaboration tools makes it clear who the experts are in a given company. Going one step further and including instant contact details for everyone in the system makes them instantly approachable.

This makes it so much easier to recruit experts from competitors than via agencies. One of the first requests we got after our systems began to move into the collaboration sphere was to remove contact details for participants. It didnt take long for the recruitment sections to discover new sources of personnel.

These problems are just the tip of the iceberg but I think they make it clear. The problems we face in collaboration arent technical. Theyre social. A lot of businesses may have the tools but they just arent ready to collaborate.

The vi arrow keys not working in Ubuntu

The vi arrow keys not working in Ubuntu

Most people get this issue of arrow keys not working for vi in Ubuntu. Instead, it displays A, B, C, and D characters.

This is because the default vi in Ubuntu is a vi light version (that is the vim-tiny package). This does not use the arrow keys as you would expect.

If you want the arrow keys to function you have to install the full vim package. By this you not only get the arrow keys working but also other nice features such as colored syntax.

Just installing the vim package should get you fixed up. Try:

sudo apt-get install vim
or
sudo apt-get install vim-full

vim-full will install all the vim related package and the dependencies, that includes gnome libs, etc... if you dont use gnome and just want to fix this issue in the text mode you can also run :

sudo apt-get install vim-runtime

Please share your thoughts and expectations in the comments at the end of this post.

Before we jump into 2016, lets review what Tracfone did in 2015, as it has been a year full with new phones, progression and expansion in service from Tracfone, and various other changes.

Tracfone Year in Review - 2015

While plenty has happened with Tracfone in 2015 we want to highlight three particular changes that were greeted with excitement and enthusiasm from consumers. The Three changes were airtime cards for smartphones, expansion of the BYOP program, and new smartphones available from Tracfone.

Data-Only and Text-Only Airtime Cards for Smartphones
When smartphones came to Tracfone in 2013, the airtime added to these phones was changed to split into three categories - Talk, Text and Data. What this meant was that if you ran out of one category, like text messages, you would have to buy more airtime for all three, even if you only need more texts!

A lot of Tracfone users were annoyed that they had an abundance of one or two categories, but were always running low on another category. Thus, when Tracfone released Data-Only Airtime cards and eventually Text-Only cards, many users were very happy to see them.

You can take a look at our post on the Tracfone Data Cards and Text Cards to learn more about them, and if they are a good deal.

Tracfone also released smartphone-only airtime cards that give you specific amounts of Talk time, Texts and Data and do no triple. We Analyzed the New Tracfone Smartphone Airtime Cards and offered our opinion on what ones are the best deal.

4G LTE BYOP for both GSM and CDMA
4G LTE coverage with Tracfone BYOP was probably the most exciting advance Tracfone made in 2015. They opened the door to a host of much more advanced smartphones that could be used with their service and many users took advantage of this and upgraded. Now you can bring an iPhone 6 or a Samsung Galaxy S6 to use with either GSM or CDMA cell service through Tracfones prepaid service.

LG Sunset with 4G LTE Service
For all of 2014 Tracfone only offered 3G CDMA smartphones for sale and many consumers who didnt have good CDMA coverage were frustrate that they couldnt upgrade to a smartphone. But in 2015 Tracfone released the LG Sunset, which was the second Android phone from Tracfone that uses GSM coverage, and the first with 4G LTE service.

We hope the Sunset will be the first of many more advanced 4G phones coming to Tracfone.

Now that weve looked back at the year, time to see whats in store with Tracfone for 2016!

What to Expect from Tracfone in 2016

We believe Tracfone will move in two primary directions for 2016; release more low-end smartphones and continue to promote the BYOP program.

Already we have seen significant advertising and promotions for bringing your own phone to Tracfone. They have done a lot to improve the process, including webpages dedicated to checking your phones compatibility and activating the device. Tracfone has also released a number of smartphone-only airtime cards, that can be used with either BYOP devices or Tracfone smartphones.

It would appear that Tracfone has found a successful niche for themselves in providing pay-as-you-go service to consumers who dont want contracts or dont need unlimited service. The major carriers like Verizon and AT&T dont really compete with Tracfone because they target very different segments of the cell phone market (heavy users vs light users).

Tracfone has the opportunity to release their own smartphones and we hope they will continue to advance and catch up with the kind of phones you can use on the BYOP program. However, Tracfone will likely only offer devices in the $100-200 range that are a few years old. If consumers want a high-end phone to use with Tracfone, they will have to bring their own.

We do expect Tracfone to continue offering non-smartphones, but dont expect they will be offering any new or updated devices. They released very few, if any, non-android phones in 2015, and that Trend will probably continue. You can still buy plenty of dumb phones from Tracfone, so dont worry about that disappearing anytime soon, it is a strong part of their profitability.

One of the weaknesses that Tracfone faces and needs to fix in 2016 is their somewhat complicated airtime structure. For new users, it can be confusing to know what which airtime is best for them to purchase, and exactly how it will be added to their phone. Right now, Tracfone offers both regular airtime cards that triple when added to a smartphone, and also smartphone-only cards that dont triple. There are airtime plans that give you minutes and 30 days of service every month, and there are auto-renewal options that automatically add a new 90 day airtime card to your phone every 3 months. We will have to wait and see if any changes come, but it is a small barrier for new customers.

Finally, we would recommend our readers continue in the direction that best suits them. So if you prefer the features and speed that a higher-end smartphone can give, then buy your own phone on Amazon, eBay or other retailers and bring it to use with Tracfone. You will have a great device and only be paying a small amount each month for service.

If you prefer a more simple device and less hassle in activating it, then go with a Tracfone branded phone. These wont be disappearing anytime soon.

We also suggest looking into some of the value plans Tracfone offers, or at buying the 1 Year/ 400 Minute Airtime card because these are some of the better deals offered by Tracfone and will help save you money if youre currently buying a 60 Minute Card every 3 months or so.

Tracfone looks like they are growing and pushing their BYOP program and we think they will continue in 2016 as the leaders of pay-as-you-go service.

We hope this post was help and gives you some perspective and ideas on where Tracfone may be heading in the coming months. Please leave a comment below with any questions or thoughts from this post.

The good and the bad all in one shiny day

The good and the bad all in one shiny day

A bright day it is. Sun is shining, a few white clouds about to break up the monotony and we are currently stuck at 25C. Perfect in every sense.

Yesterday it was a little bit cooler and a little more cloudy, but of course yesterday I finally handed in my 25 saronites and a few bits and dribbles and got my Shadows Edge. A proper highlight as well. I am now wondering about how to most quickestest get my 1000 souls. This is probably the coolest way in a long time. I have sort of decided to play DPS during trash and go back to tanking for proper fights.

And use a weird abomination spec for the fights with Putricide, Sindragosa and the Blood Queen. Of course its possible to tank with a two-handed weapon and a shield - it just requires a bit of creativity. Ends up a lot like this, though:

Impractical, and frankly, quite hideous (to quote an old friend).

So yay! Highly cheered up and bouncy all night. Looking forward to the next days.

And then, of course, came the bad. The weather forecast predicts something around 38C for the weekend. I play near the roof in a room with one window (and a fan, a blessed, precious fan). Its not going to be pretty (and only part of that is because I might have to play topless. I am not a supermodel).

There also is this RealID thing. When it first was announced I was sort of looking forward to it. I would love to be able to chat with my friends from other servers. It worked in Star Wars Galaxies (not very well - you had to enter the names manually as in MyFriend-ServernameofLengthyWeirdSpellingInStarWarsStyle) and its nifty. And then I got to read the FAQ (linked again here, because it needs to be easier to find).

So friends of my friends can see my real name?

In addition, players with Real ID relationships will be able to view each others online status, Rich Presence information, and Broadcast messages, and will be able to see which character and game their Real ID friends are playing across supported Blizzard games.

Oh really now? So people I do not know - or worse, actively do not like (we had this argument before, some of my friends really enjoy playing with someone Id call a total tosser) - know my name, the game I currently play, which alt I am on (some of which I specifically created to avoid the tosser specific people) and what server and such?

Admittedly - in most cases that wont be a big problem. I am fairly laid back about abuse (see the Spellpower DK posts - Im currently trying to generate rude remarks) and can ignore a lot, but its a little concern.

Look, even facebook allows me to choose to share my information only with friends. Facebook. You know? The people Blizzard just signed a cooperation with? The security nightmare of security nightmares? Not Blizzard, though.

Does this concern me?

Well, it didnt so much when I started online gaming. I was a mere 20 years old, going on 21. The internet was still young and the search engine of choice was Altavista and possibly Yahoo!. Are they even still around? Seems like. I was actually proud when my email account got the first spam message.

When I finished university and applied for my first job, I didnt feel bad about listing my work on Stratics as a hobby. It outlined that I actually wrote English well enough to post on an international site. Thats how I meant to play that card and thats (luckily) how my employer read it. I did get a question on "I hope youll find enough time to work with all that internet gaming", but didnt even react to that at the time.

Currently, I see the whole situation a bit more critical. I have published a paper or two on academic subjects. Id rather like those found than a post of mine on technical problems connecting to my favourite a game. I have posted on the official boards a grand total of three times in the last five years. Still too many for my employer to find out about.

I want the choice to display private information - and yes, I consider my name private.

Blizzard seemed to agree with this up until two years ago:

Nowadays, this seems to be different - and pretty much all blogs and large sites connected with World of Warcraft have pointed that out. Once or roughly 22 thousand times (at 7 pm Central European Time today).

My cunning plan was to just change my name. They dont technically need an accurate name for their billing - I can just pay by gametime card like any good troll or chinese farmer. Sadly, its impossible to change my name without rather large legal hassle. I remembered giving up on that point before when my wife accepted my name.

Upload legal documents pertaining to my namechange? Im sorry, but this goes too far for a game.

A lot of quite real concerns have been brought up within the uproar - about stalking, about discrimination and about using the game as an escape from real life. Ill not reiterate. Check a random link (not usually known for their lenience towards whining) for examples.

At lunchtime today I was completely with Gnomageddon. Im real sad to see him cancel (him? her? Ill never find out via RealID now - and cant send him/her chocolates either by a simple google search. Such an opportunity lost!) but I was very much tempted to do the exact same thing.

I have calmed down a little, though. At the moment I choose not to enable RealID and Ill give Blizzard until the end of my current billing period. The outcry is rather massive and cannot really be overlooked. They are basically aware that this was not a good stunt to pull.

Make some changes to the system to allow me more choice over who and where I want to share information. Im quite happy playing the game, but I am not willing to have World of Warcraft trample all over my privacy. When this billing period is over, Ill have to reevaluate my commitment. In the current state of affairs we will be parting.

And yes, I am aware that no one from Blizzard will reach an outlying Blog such as this. I merely use this as a medium of information for friends and family. Dont add me to RealID yet - I have no intention whatsoever of accepting anything.
