The Night Before
So I finally watched The Night Before and it was even better than I had expected.
I was suppressing giggles barely five minutes into the film as Levitt gave his best impression of an elf face (funnier than it sounds).
Seriously, what a fantastic comedy with explicit profanities, illicit drug-taking and grotesque sexual references. Its an underlying deeper story about friendship and growing up. The main actors are great together and feel real. The supporting characters make the scenes just that much better, and the holiday atmosphere will make you that much eager for December to roll around. From memorable scenes where they play Runaway - Kanye West on the toy piano, to Seth Rogen tripping major balls, to the most random appearance by Miley Cyrus singing along with Joseph - it�s a great movie for a laugh that continues even once the movie ends.
Special mention should definitely go out to Michael Shannon as the pot-dealing version of Its a Wonderful Lifes Clarence, here to sell our boys �the weed of Christmas past, the weed of Christmas present, and the weed of Christmas future.� I hope to God that he gets more roles like this in the future.
This movie also proves that Joseph is a natural as a romantic lead. Its a pity that he doesnt seem too keen to do more of these kind of roles. I get that he is very careful not to get typecast. After 500 Days of Summer he has probably been offered a gazillion variations of the same character.
Seen here is his duet to Miley Cyrus "Wrecking Ball" to herald the emotional climax. Just trust me on this one.
