The Pointlessness of Physical Dying Light Is Great A Cyclops Appears

The Pointlessness of Physical Dying Light Is Great A Cyclops Appears

*

Random thought -- Ive been a collector of physical games (meaning discs, cartridges, and so on) for quite a while, but Ive noticed over the last year or two that I havent really been going after it like I used to. Part of it is that more and more of the games that I like (usually smaller, experimental or niche titles) only exist in an electronic download format, but another part of it is the changing nature of the games themselves.

For anyone whos even been even halfway paying attention, the number of games that routinely ship with bugs and glitches these days is absurd. Theres absolutely no question that developers and publishers see "ship it now, patch it later" as a normal, acceptable thing now, and in light of this, I see less and less value in having a physical disc. I mean, whats the point of owning the plastic when so many games dont work properly without huge day-one patches.

Ive always enjoyed collecting, not only because I like the art and because these games are kind of like trophies on my wall, but because I always thought that at some point in the future Id be able to plug in some old systems and share these games with my kids and grandkids -- or in a worst-case scenario, Id have something to keep me busy while I hide out in my post-apocalyptic bunker. Thats just not possible anymore.

Oh sure, there are still plenty of discs to buy and the cases still look just as pretty, but knowing that a large number of them wont work or that theyll have significant problems without being connected to the Internet has taken some spark out of it The same enjoyment just isnt there.

Its kind of a sad realization after so many years of collecting, but I have to admit that theres no real purpose in dropping cash on what are effectively coasters Are we to the end of the "functional software in a box" era? Perhaps.

Although the Dying Light review for @Gamecritics was handled by @GC_Danny, Ive been eager to play it for a while, and I just started it a few days ago.

Before I began, I was a little dismayed to see so many mediocre or indifferent reviews, and my Twitter feed was full of writers who were not shy about mentioning how bored they were, or how brown the game was. I took note of those criticisms, but at the same time, Dead Island (from the same developers) was a game that I deeply, deeply enjoyed and the critical sphere took great joy in crapping all over that, despite the fact that it went on to become a huge success with fans and spawned several offshoots.

Suffice it to say, I expected that the same pattern might repeat here and Im glad I didnt listen to the naysaying because Ive been enjoying the hell out of it.

Calling a spade a spade, its quite fair to say that Dying Light is Dead Island 2.0 with parkour added.  However, the parkour is pretty fab. Its great to be able to jump and climb on basically anything in the environment, and outmaneuvering zombies never gets old. Dodging through a crowd, climbing up to the top of a broken-down bus or nearby building, and then dropping Molotovs down from the roof delivers a laugh every time.

Many of the criticisms I read also talked about poor writing and a bad story Although Im still quite early in the main campaign, I cant see what all the complaining was about. Though the main plot isnt anything revolutionary, it gets the job done more than respectably.

Apart from that, Ive been finding the sidequests to be fascinating. Lots of unusual situations and interesting characters have been popping up, not to mention more than a little comedy. Although Im usually the type of person who goes down the critical path in most games, Ive been having a great deal of fun going from quest to quest and seeing what they have to offer.

Some of them are simple fetches (and I skip most of those) but a surprising number have a lot of dialogue, and its great to see some of the same characters popping up over and over again. One guy who gets his arm cut off by the main villain pops up later, he remembers that I was there, and he references past events before engaging me in what hes doing now. Its kind of awesome. By following these quests I get loads of story mini-arcs, and its satisfying to see how these characters are faring.

On the other hand, I can see how playing too much of this game at a time could wear someone out, which I suspect led to a lot of the reviewer apathy. Im sure that if I was trying to beat the game on a deadline, eight or ten hours of it a day of it would get old really quickly. Since Im just playing for fun (what a novel idea!) Ive been pacing myself to doing two or three missions night, and sometimes indulging in some of the random events that pop up as well. (There are lots!)At this pace, it still feels fresh and engaging, and I look forward to playing every night. In fact, it feels almost like going through the adventure in real-time, day by day.

While Im generally happy overall, the game doesnt offer a manual save (GRR!) and it doesnt always autosave when I make it to a safe house its the most insane decision ever.

Another criticism which comes to mind is that the developers need to let go of their preference towards weapon degradation. Weapons fall apart really quickly at the beginning, and while that can be eased over time with certain skills and better gear later on, I dont think the systems here really add all that much to the formula. I mean, I end up carrying 12 weapons in my backpack because Im afraid the one Im using is going to fall apart, so theres no real tension or risk/reward there.

I also think less environmental scavenging would be good. I find myself sometimes blowing past areas which have loot just because I dont want to take the time to search or leave myself open to zombie attack, and when I do scavenge, its usually a bunch of the same stuff I mean, theres no thrill in finding my 75th bag of coffee beans, you know? Perhaps fewer opportunities to loot but with greater rewards would be a better way to go, making it feel like more of a special thing and less of a chore.

Overall, Im really, really enjoying Dying Lightand its been delivering pretty much everything that I wanted from it, and even more in some respects. If youre even remotely inclined towards giving it a try, I say do so.

In other games news: Still playing Monster Hunter 4: Ultimate (of course) although after logging about 120 hours, Im slowing down a bit. The battles are getting tougher and its requiring more strategy, so Im waiting for some of my fellow hunters to catch up before doing some of the group stuff.

Also, still playing Marvel Puzzle Quest. Just recruited Cyclops to the team earlier this evening. Its been quite a while since I read any X-books, so I was surprised by his costume.

Id never seen this one before and I have absolutely no idea whats going on in the world of the X-Men, but he was always a character that I enjoyed so it was great to see him again. Seems like hes got some nifty powers coming too.

Speaking of which, my Luke Cage is almost maxed, and although I wasnt sure about him at first, hes become a recent favorite. If you play the game, my build for him is 5/3/5 because he hits like a wrecking ball in yellow and black, and Id rather have that high offensive output rather than the little bits of defense over time that his red provides.

Couple of quick links -- the first one is for Monster Hunter weapon tutorials from @AEvanko. Ive linked to this before, but these tutorials are superb and Im going to continue to share as much information as I can in the hope of getting more people to play Monster Hunter!

The second link is the Persona 5 trailerwhich is so goddamn stylish that it hurts. I wasnt sure how I was feeling about the idea of another Persona game after putting so much time into three and four, but one look at that trailer and I was instantly pumped. Fantastic stuff!

Finally, here are the latest reviews to hit @Gamecritics:

> My review of Rollers of the Realm (Vita)

> @KayinAmohs review of Guilty Gear Xrd Sign (PS4)

> Criminial Girls: Invite Only (Vita) also from @KayinAmoh

The Flash S02E05 The darkness and the light

The Flash S02E05 The darkness and the light

The Flash
S02E05: "The darkness and the light"
Rating: 6 out of 10 (Decent)

In A Nutshell

Im instantly reminded of Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer with this weeks episode title!

Anyhow, back to the show ...

Now this is more like it. Much more Earth 2, especially in the form of a Doctor Wells overload. We see him at the start in a flashback on Earth 2, where he gives a speech about ridding the world of metahumans and Zoom. The fact he has a spat with Jay/Flash in this scene, and also says "hi" to his daughter, means that you know that is all very relevant. Indeed, after (quite easily it seems) convincing Barry hes not like our Doctor Wells, Harrison Wells 2.0 spends the episode helping everyone capture the latest metahuman to be sent by Zoom, Dr Light. Basically, she controls very bright light. The clue is there in the name I guess. I know light is fast, but as Flash is as quick or not quicker than light, I dont quite get how hes out maneuvered by her on at least 3 occasions here. Just speed up to her and knock her on the head! It should be that simple! Eventually he pretty much does that, after some rather cool multiple flash mirages, even though it seemed very unnecessary to do in order to defeat her.

Before that conclusion, we discover that shes Earth 2s version of Barrys Ex, Linda. Yes, her from the newspaper business that I said just showed up last week. Told ya she was appearing for a reason. Her Earth 2 counterpart tries to kill her but ridiculously fails, taking out the editor by "accident" before Iris shoots her helmet off to reveal her identity to our Linda. Poor Linda is confused quite how its possible, whereas I was just wondering why Iris aimed for the head? Oh well.

Along the way there was a really funny scene with a temporarily blind Barry on a date with Patty. That lady is so sexy. Ive got to stay impartial! Argh. But it was funny and cute, especially with Cisco helping Barry via in-ear audio. Quite how blind he really was is hard to fathom. Seems to be rather selective but nevertheless it was amusing.

Seems quite clear that Cisco was right, that Dr Wells version 2 is an ass. He manages to annoy everyone, especially Jay who he has a fist fight with. Seems they dont like each other! Jay in the end decides to leave. I assume hes going back via the portal? Where does that come out on Earth 2 then?

As expected from the opening of the show, Dr Wells reasons for being on our earth are to rescue his daughter who has been captured by Zoom. Im sure there are more secrets though behind him than all that.

Seeing Zoom close up at the end makes it look like hes got a suit very similar to our Flash. Is he an evil Barry?

What I liked

Barry and Pattys date; very funny.

Dr Wells 2.0; obnoxious but still captivating.

Jay/Caitlin Romance; think we all saw that coming.

No Firestorm. No Eddie Ex-Wife. Woohoo!

Earth 2 scenes.

What I Didnt Like

Cant help but think that Barry overcomplicated what was needed to take down Dr Light.

And, Doctor Light was really quite boring.

Ciscos powers. Is he seeing only the past? It all feels like a "convenient" power for plotlines to me.

Ill mention this every week, but, umm, Gideon?

Huh?

?
Helmet is very sturdy to take a bullet, but bounces off easily.

Multiple Flash! Now whys he not just do this every week?

Zoom has Dr Wells daughter in a cell and with handcuffs on. Surely only one of those is needed? Is she a metahuman?

And Finally

Much improved without any firestorm or Eddies Ex this episode. Dr Wells 2.0 is rude but brilliant as ever. His interaction with everyone is just writing genius. Although Dr Light, even with the Linda thing, wasnt that interesting or as dangerous as I think we were supposed to believe, everything else that happened this week was ten times more interesting than the last two episodes.

The Full Version of Mechwarrior 4 is now Downloadable Microsoft Gives the Green Light to Mektek

The Full Version of Mechwarrior 4 is now Downloadable Microsoft Gives the Green Light to Mektek

Can you believe it? Mechwarrior 4 is now freeware!

Details of the launch after the jump.

Nearly a year ago, I wrote an article about the impending release of Mechwarrior 4 as freeware. I was then oblivious---as were the people of Mektek, who were dubbed as the distributors of Mechwarrior 4 by no other than the founder of FASA himself, Jordan Weisman---that the launch would hit a legal snag with the people at Microsoft, the Mechwarrior franchises last publisher.

Now nearly a year later (and a gazillion queries posted on the comment section of my "MechWarrior 4 Downloadable Free FPS Game Gameplay (Demo Version)" Youtube video), Microsoft finally gives the green light for the people at Mektek to release the game as a downloadable FREE PC FPS simulator game.

Let loose the juggernauts of war!

The Text of Light

The Text of Light

"All that is is light." - Dun Scotus Erigena

"To see a world in a grain of sand." - William Blake

These the primary impulses while working on this film. It is dedicated to Jim Davis who showed me the "first spark" of refracted film light.
