The Flash S02E04 The fury of Firestorm

The Flash S02E04 The fury of Firestorm

The Flash
S02E04: "The fury of Firestorm"
Rating: 5 out of 10 (OK)

In A Nutshell

The title sent a chill down my spine, for this was indeed the story of firestorm part 2. Wed seen all this in season one and it wasnt that interesting last time for me. Given we started with a flashback to a young American football wannabe getting zapped by the explosion from star lab 2 years ago, you knew that even when theyd said that the Professor needed another donor to save his life, and they offered two possibilities, it was obvious who the right one would be. So, it wasnt much surprise that the footballer ended up joining with the Professor after some early reluctance, and the other possibility, a scientist, turned out to be obnoxious, have anger issues and also not afraid to start using the firestorm powers hed inadvertently had switched on. There was nothing complex here (aside from the science perhaps) and it was all pretty daft how anyone would sign up for such a life, even with the superhero powers. At least at the end, both firestorm peeps leave to go off and meet one of the professors pals who can help them more. Seems awfully familiar ...

Aside from this, we had more on the dullness that is Joes Ex-wife, although now we find out shes dying and has months to live. Iris does meet her before hearing this but tells her where to go, before being a little nicer later on, but still telling her where to go after finding out something that Joe doesnt know, which is that the ex has a son. Its a little twist on things, but Im still not interested much in what feels like a storyline forced on us.

Whats more fun is Patty, Joes assistant cop, and Barrys flirting, which is amusing and cute.

However, things really jump up a level once again in the last few minutes, when Dr Wells saves Barry/Flash from a mutant sharkman (yup, you heard me) after he was checking out Patty in a caf. She had tried to shoot the shark in comical fashion before Wells shoots the sharkman and reveals himself to Barry. Not sure why he did that, but Id reckon its all a ploy.
What I liked

Sharkman; ridiculous, but also awesome.

Barry/Patty; too cute to not progress surely?

Dr Wells sneaking about on Earth 1, and his reveal at the end.

What I Didnt Like

Firestorm; weve done all this before! And the CGI was quite rubbish on the firestorm wannabe.

Joe, ex-wife, and Iris; its a serious distraction from all the interesting stuff. Although this week, firestorm was the other stuff. Sigh.

Ill mention this every week, but, umm, Gideon?

We want Zoom, Jay and Earth 2!

Whats with everyone continually hiding things from each other based on what they think is best for them? Even Joe is at it again, hiding Doctor Wells discovery from Barry before he reveals himself at the end anyway.

Huh?

?
CGI disaster sadly for this guy. Every time he did anything it just looked wrong.

Im back. And Im glad!

"Hello. My names Bruce"
And Finally

Weve see this all before, although at least theres hope that firestorm might go away for a while this time. The Joe ex-wife story continues along like an unwanted cousin visiting at Christmas time, whereas the interesting stuff simmers in the background.

The Struggles of Being A Completionist At Heart

The Struggles of Being A Completionist At Heart

You could say I was once a completionist. When I was in high school, I remember multiple years in a row my Nanna came over to babysit and said Are you still playing that?! because she saw me playing Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy X again. I was always hunting for some kind of weapon or an enemy in order to explore every inch of the game. You could say I definitely still have completionist tendencies, with my constant urge to get the Platinum Trophy for every game I love. I love playing new games as much as any other gamer, but I also crave the satisfaction and fun that comes from exploring every corner of a game. But with the amount of games that are around these days, its sometimes hard to choose between being a crazy completionist or trying the constant stream of cool games being released every month.

One of the first game series I finished to 100% completion was the original Spyro the Dragon on PS One. I did this on and off throughout my childhood and high school, but there was always a point where I could finish one game and go back to my Spyro game or grind Spyro for a few weeks and forget about any new releases. I could manage to play most of the games I bought that year and give them all a worthy amount of playing time. Since I was only playing PS One games, my backlog was basically non-existent.

Once I got into the Final Fantasy X games, which got me into JRPGs, I was in completionist heaven. JRPGs are known for being full of so many quests, side quests, ultimate weapons, treasure chests, secret Easter Eggs etc. It was this kind of depth that was perfect for my completionist tendencies, along with all the other great things about the JRPG genre, that got me hooked to the genre pretty quickly and made me stick with the genre for a long time. Playing Final Fantasy X and X-2 (which I got 100% in) was a completely new level to the scavenger quest that was mastering a game and I welcomed it for multiple years in a row.

Although I definitely had fun spending so much time playing and replaying those games to try complete them, that time period also opens up the main downside of being a completionist: the time taken away from playing other games. My PS2 was pretty monogamous for the Final Fantasy X games, meaning I missed out on some JRPG essentials such as Wild Arms, Dragon Quest and Star Ocean, just to name a few. I remember seeing some of these games and thinking they looked interesting, but being content enough with my completionist lifestyle not to purchase them. I dont regret my time playing Final Fantasy X, in fact I still love that game very much, but it does add to my current backlog because there was some genuinely good, potentially even better games I didnt even touch then.

Nowadays in the era of PS4, XBox One and all the other available consoles new and old, theres more games to choose from then ever because theres so many old and current home and portable consoles. Its hard for me to come to terms with the fact that theres probably not enough time in the world to ever play all the games I want to play, let alone scavenge through them to completely finish them. Its also however a brilliant time to be gamer because there is so much choice, so when it comes to picking between finding treasure chests or experiencing as many great games as possible, Id rather try play as many games as possible.

Of course, it is down to personal preference in the end. There are plenty of gamers who play games like Disgaea for years and then move on to the next deep game experience to completely finish. With so many games coming out now however, I truly dont think I can get pass the feeling Id be missing out on something. I loved my time playing Final Fantasy X for multiple years and a little more recently playing Persona 4 Golden for 7 months in order to platinum it, but for now Im lowering my completionist habit to play as many great experiences as possible. Maybe one day Ill do it more actively, but I know Id be incredibly sad if I missed releases like Persona 5 because I was busy looking for a hidden locked treasure chest or weapon with higher stats.

The List of ONE

The List of ONE

There seems to be a movement to collect ideas into valuable Top Ten lists, or worse yet 100 Useful Strategies lists. Instead of recording ideas in bulk, how about taking one truly powerful idea, and explaining it in great detail.

I know youve done some cool projects in your time... why not tell me about one, and share how the idea was transformative for you and your students? Maybe Ill make the leap to build on your idea, adding even greater value.

When I read through a long list of strategies, tools or ideas, I might follow one or two of the most interesting links, or I might bookmark the page and never visit it again. Why not save us all the trouble and just point us to the most compelling stuff right away?

The POWER of the FOX! Mozilla Firefox Tricks

The POWER of the FOX! Mozilla Firefox Tricks

Mozilla Firefox is one of the most used internet browsers today along with Google Chrome. But do you use it effectively? or you do not know what this browser is capable of? Let me give you some tricks and things you do not know you can do with your Mozilla Firefox.

1. More screen space.

Make your icons small. Go to View - Toolbars - Customize and check the Use small icons box.

2. Smart keywords.

If theres a search you use a lot (lets say IMDB.coms people search), this is an awesome tool that not many people use. Right-click on the search box, select Add a Keyword for this search, give the keyword a name and an easy-to-type and easy-to-remember shortcut name (lets say actor) and save it. Now, when you want to do an actor search, go to Firefoxs address bar, type actor and the name of the actor and press return. Instant search! You can do this with any search box.

3. Keyboard shortcuts.

This is where you become a real Jedi. It just takes a little while to learn these, but once you do, your browsing will be super fast. Here are some of the most common (and my personal favs):

* Spacebar (page down)
* Shift-Spacebar (page up)
* Ctrl+F (find)
* Alt-N (find next)
* Ctrl+D (bookmark page)
* Ctrl+T (new tab)
* Ctrl+K (go to search box)
* Ctrl+L (go to address bar)
* Ctrl+= (increase text size)
* Ctrl+- (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-W (close tab)
* F5 (reload)
* Alt-Home (go to home page)

4. Auto-complete.

This is another keyboard shortcut, but its not commonly known and very useful. Go to the address bar (Control-L) and type the name of the site without the www or the .com. Lets say google. Then press Control-Enter, and it will automatically fill in the www and the .com and take you there - like magic! For .net addresses, press Shift-Enter, and for .org addresses, press Control-Shift-Enter.

5. Tab navigation.

Instead of using the mouse to select different tabs that you have open, use the keyboard. Here are the shortcuts:

* Ctrl+Tab (rotate forward among tabs)
* Ctrl+Shft+Tab (rotate to the previous tab)
* Ctrl+1-9 (choose a number to jump to a specific tab)

6. Mouse shortcuts.

Sometimes youre already using your mouse and its easier to use a mouse shortcut than to go back to the keyboard. Master these cool ones:

* Middle click on link (opens in new tab)
* Shift-scroll down (previous page)
* Shift-scroll up (next page)
* Ctrl-scroll up (decrease text size)
* Ctrl-scroll down (increase text size)
* Middle click on a tab (closes tab)

7. Delete items from address bar history.

Firefoxs ability to automatically show previous URLs youve visited, as you type, in the address bars drop-down history menu is very cool. But sometimes you just dont want those URLs to show up (I wont ask why). Go to the address bar (Ctrl-L), start typing an address, and the drop-down menu will appear with the URLs of pages youve visited with those letters in them. Use the down-arrow to go down to an address you want to delete, and press the Delete key to make it disappear.

8. User chrome.

If you really want to trick out your Firefox, youll want to create a UserChrome.css file and customize your browser. Its a bit complicated to get into here, but check out this tutorial.

9. Create a user.js file.

Another way to customize Firefox, creating a user.js file can really speed up your browsing. Youll need to create a text file named user.js in your profile folder (see this to find out where the profile folder is) and see this example user.js file that you can modify. Created by techlifeweb.com, this example explains some of the things you can do in its comments.

10. about:config.

The true power users tool, about.config isnt something to mess with if you dont know what a setting does. You can get to the main configuration screen by putting about:config in the browsers address bar. See Mozillazinesabout:config tips and screenshots.

11. Add a keyword for a bookmark

. Go to your bookmarks much faster by giving them keywords. Right-click the bookmark and then select Properties. Put a short keyword in the keyword field, save it, and now you can type that keyword in the address bar and it will go to that bookmark.

12. Speed up Firefox.

If you have a broadband connection (and most of us do), you can use pipelining to speed up your page loads. This allows Firefox to load multiple things on a page at once, instead of one at a time (by default, its optimized for dialup connections). Heres how:

* Type about:config into the address bar and hit return. Type network.http in the filter field, and change the following settings (double-click on them to change them):
* Set network.http.pipelining to true
* Set network.http.proxy.pipelining to true
* Set network.http.pipelining.maxrequests to a number like 30. This will allow it to make 30 requests at once.
* Also, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it nglayout.initialpaint.delay and set its value to 0?. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

13. Limit RAM usage.

If Firefox takes up too much memory on your computer, you can limit the amount of RAM it is allowed to us. Again, go to about:config, filter browser.cache and select browser.cache.disk.capacity. Its set to 50000, but you can lower it, depending on how much memory you have. Try 15000 if you have between 512MB and 1GB ram.

14. Reduce RAM usage further for when Firefox is minimized.

This setting will move Firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, taking up much less memory. And there is no noticeable difference in speed when you restore Firefox, so its definitely worth a go. Again, go to about:config, right-click anywhere and select New-> Boolean. Name it config.trim_on_minimize and set it to TRUE. You have to restart Firefox for these settings to take effect.

15. Move or remove the close tab button.

Do you accidentally click on the close button of Firefoxs tabs? You can move them or remove them, again through about:config. Edit the preference for browser.tabs.closeButtons. Here are the meanings of each value:

* 0: Display a close button on the active tab only
* 1: (Default) Display close buttons on all tabs
* 2: Dont display any close buttons
* 3: Display a single close button at the end of the tab bar (Firefox 1.x behavior)

16. Build your own Firefox search engine

Want to power up Firefoxs search box? Its easy to create your own search engine, so that you can rifle through any site from right within Firefox. Adding a search engine that has already been written, of course, is easy. Click the down arrow to the left of the search box, select "Manage Search Engines," then click the "Get more search engines" link at the bottom of the screen. From the Web site that appears, click the search engine you want to install, and youre done.

There are plenty of sites that dont have prebuilt search engines, though. No problem: Its easy to build your own search engine. First install the OpenSearchFox add-on. Then, when youre on a search site, right-click the search box and choose the Add OpenSearch plug-in. From the screen that appears (shown below), type in the name that you want to be associated with the search engine, add a description of the search engine and click Next. Then click Finish, and the site will be added as a search engine that you can choose like any other -- by clicking the arrow to the left of the search box and selecting the engine.

Building your own Firefox search engine. (Click image to see larger view)

Note that as of this writing, OpenSearchFox doesnt work properly with Firefox v. 2.0.0.10 or 2.0.0.11, although it may be fixed as you read this. When you use the add-on in v. 2.0.0.1 or 2.0.0.11, youll get an error message after you click Finish, although in some instances, even if you get the error message, the search engine will still be added.

17. Use keywords to speed up your searching

Dont want to go to the trouble of adding your search engine -- or you cant get OpenSearchFox to work properly? Heres another way to do an instant search. When youre at a site, right-click on its search box and select "Add a Keyword for this Search." Type in a name for it and an easy-to-remember shortcut (for example, hp for the Huffington Post blog site). Then click OK. Now, to search the site, go to the Address Bar, and type in your shortcut, followed by a search term, such as hp Clinton. Youll search the site, just as if you were there. Note that on occasion, the search wont work properly, but it will on most sites.

18. Use keywords to speed up bookmarks

Visiting your favorite sites using Firefoxs bookmarks is far too much of a chore -- do you really want to do all that mousing around? Instead, you can use keywords to instantly jump to any site youve bookmarked. To do it, after you bookmark a site, right-click on the bookmark, select Properties, type in a short keyword (or even just a letter or two) in the keyword field and click OK. Now, to visit the site, type in the keyword in Firefoxs address bar, and youll jump straight to the site.

Adding a keyword to a bookmark. (Click image to see larger view)

19. Put your own graphic on the Firefox tool bar

If you dont like the plain background of Firefoxs tool bar, dont worry -- you can put your own graphic there. Type the following into the userChrome.css file and put the graphic that you want to use, background.gif, in the same directory as userChrome.css. The graphic can be any name and any type of image file supported by Firefox.

Heres the code to use:
/* Change the toolbar graphic */
menubar, toolbox, toolbar, .tabbrowser-tabs {
background-image: url("background.gif") !important;
background-color: none !important;
}

The graphic you use will automatically be scaled to fit the tool bar. For example, if its small, it will be tiled.

20. Hack the stop, back and forward buttons

Are you a minimalist? Does it annoy you that theres a big fat Stop button on the Firefox tool bar, even when theres nothing to stop? And how about the Forward and Back buttons -- if theres no place to go forward or back, would you like them simply to disappear?
Youre in luck, because its simple to do. Add these lines below to userChrome.css. Note that even after this trick, the buttons will appear when theres a use for them. For example, when a page is loading, the Stop button will appear, so that you can stop loading the page; it just wont appear when a page isnt loading. And the Forward and Back buttons will appear when theres something to go forward or back to:

/* Remove the Stop button when content isnt loading*/
#stop-button[disabled="true"] { display: none; }

/* Remove the Back button when theres nothing to go back to */
#back-button[disabled="true"] { display: none; }

/* Remove the Forward button when theres nothing to go forward to */
#forward-button[disabled="true"] { display: none; }

21. Move the sidebar to the right

Firefox has a sidebar for viewing your history or bookmarks. It normally displays on the left-hand side when you choose View-->Sidebar. If you prefer, though, you can have the sidebar instead appear on the right, by typing this code into the userChrome.css file:

/* Place the sidebar on the right edge of the window */
hbox#browser { direction: rtl; }
hbox#browser > vbox { direction: ltr; }

This image has been resized. Click this bar to view the full image. The original image is sized 756x583.

After hacking userChrome.css, you can make the Sidebar appear on the right, instead of on the left.

22. Change the search bar width

Dont like the width of the search bar on the upper-right hand corner of Firefox? No problem -- its easy to change. All you need to do is specify the width you want, in pixels. Use this code in userChrome.css to tell the search bar to be 600 pixels wide, but you can, of course, use whatever size you want:

/* Make the Search box wider
(in this case 600 pixels wide) */
#search-container, #searchbar {
max-width: 600px !important;
width: 600px !important; }

Heres the normal-size search box ...

... and here it is, after the hack, 600 pixels wide.

23. Remove menu items

Are there menu items -- for example, Help -- that you never use? If so, you can easily make them disappear. To remove the Help menu, add this to userChrome.css:

/* Remove the Help menu */
menu[label="Help"] {
display: none !important; }

You can remove any of the other menus as well. Use the same syntax as above and substitute its name (File, Edit, View, History, Bookmarks or Tools). So, for example, to remove both the Help and Tools menu, youd add these lines to userChrome.css:

/* Remove the Help and Tools menus */
menu[label="Tools"], menu[label="Help"] {
display: none !important; }

Heres Firefox with the normal complement of menus ...

... and here it is, minus the Help and Tools menus.

Thats it! By the way you can download the latest Mozilla Firefox browser here.

Enjoy the power of your Mozilla Firefox! :)

The Nature of Metro

The Nature of Metro

A few posts back I theorised Metro was either just a new skin for IE and a tieling mode for Windows window manager. Well heres the proof.

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/window-on-windows/tweak-windows-8-to-remove-the-metro-interface/5077?tag=nl.e101

The registry hack to switch off Metro and restore the Windows 7 task bar with start menu has already been found. Microsoft should just be distributing this as a service pack or add-on of some kind. Not a whole new OS.

The rocking of the moon

The rocking of the moon

I am watching Sagans "Cosmos" series from decades ago and just learned about a wobble in the moon.

I recall that the reason we always see one side of the moon is that the moon is not round, that it is "heavier enough" on one side that the mutual gravity between the earth and moon keep that heavier side pulled toward the earth. (Mind bender: to the rest of space, the moon is spinning; to us, it doesnt look like its spinning because its pointing toward us we make our way around the Sun.)

I recall that humans put some special mirrors on the moon so we could aim lasers at them and measure how long it takes for the laser light to get there, bounce off the mirrors and arrive back home, and thus measure the distance, since we know how fast light travels through space. The principle behind the mirrors is just like your cars reflectors. Youve seen your reflection in a store whose corner has a mirror on each wall: as you walk by, you continually see your reflection in that very corner, albeit reversed. The reflectors of a car--and the mirrors on the moon--have three surfaces (one more than the store) so that the image bounces back for up and down motion, too. So, no matter where you are, if you shine a light at that corner mirror, the light bounces straight back to you.

In the Cosmos program, Carl noted how scientists used lasers and those mirrors on the moon to measure our distance from the moon with amazing accuracy ("only in error by about one millionth of a percent"). Picture that the moons heavy side is facing us, like a bell out in space that always "hangs" directly away from the earth. Scientists measured the distance of the moon from us over quite a long period of time and observed a wobble, back and forth. Some concluded that this was evidence of the moon having been struck long ago by a comet or meteor, making it rock back and forth as it restabilizes toward not wobbling, toward simply facing toward us with no wobble. Cool.

The Importance of Email Retention Journaling and Recoverability and why Cloud Solutions Fail

The Importance of Email Retention Journaling and Recoverability and why Cloud Solutions Fail

For most of us, email is simply a means of communicating work.  Its a glorified, bi-directional to-do list with comments. Emails come in, we read, do and delete. Once the work is done, theres usually no need to find the email again.

Thats all very true except for when something goes wrong and your company gets taken to court. Suddenly then, all those deleted emails are very, very important.

How Email Discovery could work under Litigation

So, assuming that theres a legal case, such as a lawsuit, that involves your company. You could be asked to produce all the emails within a given period (say, six months) which include certain key phrases -- or perhaps all emails from a now-terminated employee.

In the event that email cannot be produced, you could be fined or worse, you could lose the ability to defend your company in court.

...and it doesnt stop there, your company might not even be directly involved in the court case but could be dragged in as a third party via a subpoena.

No matter how lawfully YOU run your business, not having adequate email retention is a business risk that you simply cant afford to take.

Why A Restore is Not Enough

From an IT point of view, we dont usually talk about legal things.  Were all about Backups and Restores (and recoverability) as if its simply a matter of getting missing data back.

The theory, for example being that if a user loses their file today and theyve not worked on it for a couple of weeks, then any backup from the last few weeks is sufficient.

In this case, the intention is simply to recover the lost data.

What were finding though is that recoverability is much more than simple data restoration. What if, instead of simply recovering the data, we had to prove that no changes had occurred in it between the recovered date and the date it was deleted.  The only way to do that would be to recover all versions of this (or to have unquestioned data tracking enabled).

Email is very much a dynamic kind of "file".  For example, you might be able to recover a mail from July 7 which was deleted on July 20, via the Backup from July 15, but that doesnt mean that someone didnt reply to that message on July 16 and then delete the reply along with the original message on July 20.

Mail Journaling

Theres only one sure way to demonstrate that youve effectively captured all email;

Have a copy of every single inbound, outbound and internal mail copied to mail storage which does not permit deletion - and retain that mail for the appropriate legal period (not necessarily 7 years) - even if the employee in question has left the company.

and...

Have auditing facilities in place to protect the mail stores from administrator intervention or unauthorised access and, have a monitoring process watching the store-process to ensure that it doesnt stop.

In our case, weve been using the Veritas solution... but now weve discovered that moving to IBM Verse will prevent us from being able to journal purely internal mail.

Why the Cloud Systems are failing us

In the past, when we had our own mail servers on-site, we could direct outbound SMTP traffic to go via our external archiving partners, our inbound mail could be captured via redirected MX records and our purely internal mail could be captured via Journaling.

With the cloud services, attempting to provide a one-size-fits-all solution, these options are not necessarily available to us. In our case, with IBM Verse, weve been able to sort out inbound and outbound mail mail via the traditional means (after a bit of fiddling) but it turns out that theres no way to journal purely internal mail to an external system (so much for open systems).

We have to abandon our archive solution and go for IBMs offering -- except, of course, that we cant really abandon our old solution because we need to keep it going, possibly indefinitely... unless we migrate it elsewhere (See the Chart at the end of this post).

Ive looked at Microsoft and Google and they seem to have the same problems. Their products dont seem to support external journaling any more (or theyre in the process of depreciating them).

Ive also noticed that since were using cloud services, its no longer possible to restore mail (after the trash has been emptied).  This too is a feature of the three cloud services I looked at.

One thing is certain - If youre looking to put your email in the cloud you MUST subscribe to the cloud mail retention service from the SAME vendor.... and, the choices you make today could be the choices you continue to pay for well after youve migrated to a competitors system.

Recommended Reading and thinking

The whole Email Retention thing pretty much kicked off in 2002 with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in the US.  Most of the western world now has an equivalent act in place. If youre not up on that, its good reading.

The whole Hillary Clinton thing is worth reading too - its a bit wider than simply mail preservation but its a good example of the rules around email in action.

There are lots of free whitepapers around on Email Retention. Just do a google search and click on some of the PDFs that come up.

Thinking more widely, we need to be prepared for the next leap in litigation; At some point, the courts are going to start asking people to produce records of instant messaging, posts and comments on collaboration platforms.

Do your staff leaving processes leave their collaborative data intact and allocated to the original owner?  How do you handle "deleted comments"?

How Long do we need to Retain Email?

This excellent chart is from Contural Incs excellent 2007 Whitepaper: How Long Should Email be Saved?  It was sponsored by Symantec who have since moved the business to Veritas.  The chart shows that different types of emails have different retention times.

The Legend Of Heroes Trails Of Cold Steel USA PS3

The Legend Of Heroes Trails Of Cold Steel USA PS3

Title : ???? ????
Publisher : XSEED
Genre: Rpg Turn-Based
Release Date : December 22, 2015
ID : BLUS-31572
Total Size : 3,8 Gb
Language : English

The basic gameplay is nearly identical to the previous Kiseki series entries with a few changes. The biggest change to the battle system and also counting as a brand new feature is the "Tactical Link System". The "Tactical Link" allow players follow up with three different kinds of link attacks, dealing additional damage and providing various other benefits. "Tactical Link" becomes a more useful asset to the player as the story progress and characters level up their "Link Levels" with other characters. As the link levels increase, you will obtain new link abilities such as healing the link partner or increase the CP gain of the partner. Another change is the Orbment system. Sen no Kiseki inherits the "Master Quartz" system from Ao no Kiseki. However, the Quartz system has been revamped. Sen no Kiseki does away with the sepith count associated with quartzes, which means orbal arts no longer depend on the overall sepith count on a single line but is instead based on the quartz you equip (EG: Equipping the Fire Bolt quartz allows your character to use the art Fire Bolt. Equipping HP1 only increases your HP and does not give you any arts because the sepith system is not in place). This game is also the first game in the series that was developed for the PS3. The game features 360 degree camera control, fully 3D character models, and voice conversations between characters on the overworld map, all of which are brand new features to the Kiseki series. Players can transfer save data between the PlayStation 3 and Vita versions using the cross-save function.

The Platinum Log Rune Factory Tides of Destiny

The Platinum Log Rune Factory Tides of Destiny

When I was 15 years old a massive ice storm trapped me home for days. School was canceled, we lost internet and cable, and all I could really do was stay away from the windows (as trees were falling down across town), and play my video games. One such game was Harvest Moon 64, and although I had never really given it much of a chance before, it was just about the only game I had I hadnt finished. So, I sat there, played for a "bit," and watched the hours fly by. I loved Harvest Moon 64, and after "finishing" it, I was very eager to play more.

Jumping ahead quite a few years, my love for Harvest Moon eventually turned into love for the spin off fantasy version of it called Rune Factory, and my newer PS3 with very few games for it lead me to buy none other than Rune Factory Tides of Destiny. Now I had heard mixed things about this game from those who had played Japanese versions of it, but I really didnt care. The moment I learned my local GameStop had a copy, I rushed to the store before it was gone (as only a handful of copies came in apparently), and then spent the entire night in front of my TV. (Looking back now, this was during the early days of NGR... Amazing how time flies!)

While Tides of Destiny was in fact different from past HM and RF games, it was still something I really enjoyed. Farming was replaced with an automatic system where different captured monsters would grow different crop for you, but thanks to the new fully 3D world and focus on exploration, I didnt miss it much. Rather than constantly worrying about my farm, I was out in the town making friends, exploring ruins I had found at sea, and running around leveling up skills to make my character stronger. The story was also interesting enough for me to become more invested in these characters and their life, and by the time I finished I wanted to keep going -- so I did! At first I was planning on making this game my first platinum trophy on PSN, but after finishing most content I became less and less motivated. You see, after finishing all of the challenging trophies, and that is really left was grindy ones -- or more specifically "catch a cold 100 times." While this might not sound like much, it is... To get this trophy you had to pass out day after day hoping you would wake up with a cold. This means you would end your days early, possibly missing events and neglecting others, and then possibly wake up sick for the next. Considering the game has abilities to level in all categories (including walking), your character eventually builds up an immune system to sickness and it becomes harder and harder to catch a cold. This is why it can possibly take hundreds of in game throw away days to achieve this trophy, and why I walked away from the game.

Awhile later, after I got the platinum in Gravity Rush, I did return to RF to finish what I started, but because I waited, it didnt end up being my first platinum as intended. Even so, it was a game I really liked, and Im glad I did go back for it eventually. Sure it might not be the best "Harvest Moon" out there, but it was still a fun RPG.

The Legend of Zeldo Lonks Awakening DX

The Legend of Zeldo Lonks Awakening DX

I was looking through the virtual games for the IPhone and came across The Legend of Zeldo Lonks Awakening DX by Virtually Competent, LLC which is 5.4 MB and works with iOS 8.0 or later. The game is literally a dead on knock-off. According to reviews with...err...poor controls and yes you have to pay for the game...I think? Maybe not who knows for sure I forgot. I was searching and thought being as Nintendo have moved to mobile gaming maybe they would also port some of their Zelda games?

Nintendo are highly against fan-made games it makes me wonder what theyd think of Lonk? A parody of Link and the Zelda series. If the name wasnt funny enough Zeldo! Imagine replacing an "A" with an "O" its quite funny. There are also several other Zelda knock-off games in the store but some of them do not use Nintendo like designs or base their characters on Nintendo.
