The Future of Games

The Future of Games

If you have the 30 minutes to spare, Jesse Schells recent talk at DICE 2010, is quite a cage-rattler. The financial strategies that underpin many of todays games may be surprising, but there is no arguing the fact that todays games captivate an audience hungry for social play.

In Design Outside the Box Jesse paints a future where point systems and emerging technologies form the scaffolding for an economy that is dependent upon gameplay.

Knowing such a world may be on the way: What role should gaming play in education?

The Joy and Despair of Writing These Stupid Games

The Joy and Despair of Writing These Stupid Games

Please, Charlie Bucket, save me from this hell of my own devising! Ive been in 80-hour-week crunch for 15 months!
"We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams." - Willy Wonka
"Forget it. Music makers and dreamers of dreams make no money." - Every Sensible Human

Last week, I wrote what is probably the most viewed blog post Ive ever written, about the rough road of writing indie games for a living. I decided not to post it like ten times before I finally hit the Publish button. Now Im really glad I did. The response I received was far more positive than I ever expected.

Also, I made a lot of young, talented, ambitious people sad. Which is its own reward.

As is my style, I want to follow up with a few points raised, questions I wanted to answer, the occasional rebuttal, and a few words about making a living in this marvelous, gruesome industry.

The Good and Bad News

I wish I could remember where I first heard this, but its true wisdom:

Video game development is not a software industry. Its an entertainment industry.

If you want security and stability in your life (and believe me, if you are sane, this is what you want), write web infrastructure or banking software. Trying to make a living writing games is like trying to be an actor, or a musician, or a cinematographer. Not as bad as wanting to be a poet, but close.

This is a business for misfit toys, people who are in it because we love it, because we live and breathe it.

This doesnt describe everyone who makes games, of course. Doesnt describe the executives. (But what can you do?) Doesnt describe the people who moved into the casual space  and iOS to chase the easy money. (They will be winnowed soon enough.) But the people who design the stuff? Who test and build it? Were the freaks. The true believers.

You want to write indie games, and youre scared? You should be scared. Im scared every damn day. Ive been writing games for my whole life. I HATE writing games. Im sick to death of it. I do it because I have to. Its all Im good for.

(But sometimes, every great once in a while, I do something right. Some tweak of dialogue, some clever design decision, some encounter that just comes off right. And ... Its just joy. Wouldnt trade it for anything.)

Games workers are treated like garbage. If only there was something that could be done. If only someone had faced these same problems before. Hmmm. It is a puzzle.
But Also, Game Writers Are Victimized. They Dont Have To Be.

This is a truly fantastic article about how gruesome life in the games industry is, and what needs to be done about it. Everyone who cares about games should read it. It explains why almost nobody can spend a full career writing games and perfecting their craft. And, thus, why most games are so derivative and terrible.

Where Baby Indies Come From

In Chekhovs awesome play The Seagull, Nina, a young actress, says, "You have no idea how awful it is when you know youre acting badly." This is true across all art forms.

Sometimes, you play Dudegunshooter XXXL 1 and say, "Wow, that was awesome!". Then play Dudegunshooter XXXL 4 and say, "This is sort of getting tired." Then you play Dudegunshooter XXXL 7 and says, "Boy, theyre really phoning it in now." Then you stop buying them and last you heard theyre on Dudegunshooter XXXL 10 and everyone is just sort of sighing and shaking their heads.

You ever play a game and think, "This is so tired and phoned in and joyless."? Well, imagine how painful it is to write that game. To burn your life and youthful energy away in a cloud of 100-hour-week crunchtime to create a big pile of creativity-free meh.

Ive done it. Ive written games where my heart wasnt in it. It shows in the final product, and its excruciating. (You might not like Avadon 2: The Corruption, my new game. Thats fine. But theres a lot of neat stuff and attention to detail in that game. Like it or not, I think its clear Im at least trying.)

Its hard to be young and creative and ambitious and burn those super-productive years away on something you dont believe in. That is why developers turn indie. Not for money (though that helps a lot), but for the joy of creation.

I dont want to discourage anyone. I dont want anyone to give up. I want them to make awesome games for me to play. I just want them to be prepared. I want every word I write to help make more successes.

Never forget. If you are willing to pay any price to work in a field, someone will eventually try to make you give up everything.

Let Someone Tell You a Story

In my previous article, I came down way too hard on Alexander Bruce, creator of Antichamber. Hes the real damn deal, putting in his years in the trenches to make good work. If you want to write indie games (or start any small business), treat yourself to this talk.

Its all there. The passion. The good luck and good connections. The quest for perfection and the toll it can take on you. The recognition of and correction of mistakes. Its a perfect example of that old, true aphorism: It takes ten years to make an overnight success.

But this was also the path taken by a relatively unencumbered young person with the serious chops necessary to win design competitions (and the precious funding that comes along with that). If you lack this sort of superhuman energy or have the obligations that can come with getting older (such as, Heaven forbid, having kids), you will have to do less. This has a direct cost, paid in lower odds of success.

Luck, and the Making Of Same

Antichamber is the story of what it takes to make a HIT: Write a first-rate title, and market it until youre on the ragged edge of a nervous breakdown.

My previous article was trying to say, among other things, that this isnt the route you have to take. Some games dont lend themselves well to this sort of press. Some developers arent capable of it. Heck, Im close to freaking out all the time doing a fraction of what Alexander Bruce did.

I mean, Im not a hermit or anything, but Im really introverted. I hate meeting strangers, and I like my house a lot. If I had to go to a million conventions doing heavy PR to sell my games, my games would not exist. Like my work or not, I dont think gaming would be better off without them.

However, this bit is key: The less you do, the smaller the rewards and the more you need a lucky break. The more you do, the less you rely on luck. If you listen to the talk, dont let it destroy your will. Only understand that it is showing you one point of the yardstick that will be used to measure you.

These children will not be successful game developers. Must be because they are lazy.

And One More Thing About Luck

I knew that the thing about the previous post that would get up peoples noses the most was the luck part. That luck makes a difference in whether a business succeeds. Its the most controversial obviously true statement I can think of.

Look, you have to work hard. The more you scramble, the more often good breaks will come your way, and the better you will be able to take advantage of them when they do.

And I know why people hate talking about luck. People who havent made it want to believe they are entirely in control of their own destiny. People who have made it want to believe it was entirely because they were awesome. Neither are ever true, but facing it is too scary, so we dont.

Luck matters at every single point along the journey. Look at me. Im lucky. How was I lucky? Well, I was born in a wealthy, safe country where I wasnt at risk of dying from dysentery or civil war. (Not a lot of hot indie talent coming out of Syria these days.) I had supportive, reasonably affluent parents who were able to get me a computer and programming lessons and didnt freak out when I spent 80 hours one summer beating Bards Tale II. (And they worried. I know they did.) Im lucky that the brain tumor I had removed when I was 18 didnt take me out of the game entirely.

Obviously, this isnt about games anymore. Its a whole way of looking at life. In the end, well all believe what we need to to get where we want to go. Sometimes, however, someone needs to point out the reality of the thing.

Thanks To Everyone Who Said Nice Things

I really appreciate it. Thanks to everyone who follows me on Twitter now. Ill try to be cute and clever and not murder my career. And thats all I have to say about the business end of things for a while.

I want to do some game criticism for our bit. Our art form is flourishing in a lot of ways, and people trying to say intelligent things about how to make it better are really needed.

---

Edit: A Quick Addenda About Luck

The frustrating thing about this topic is that everyone hears a different thing when I say the word "luck." Here is a quote from my previous article in which I make explicit the mechanism in which luck works (and helps or doesnt help niche developers like me):

"Some gamers will love you, and some wont. You have to hang on until one of those gamers becomes an editor somewhere. The more niche your product is, the longer you will have to wait."

Its not about magic. Its about how you can search in the wilderness for a while until you find that person who can appreciate that weird thing you do and has the power and willingness to help you. You have to do the searching, and luck tells you how long you have to endure until you find what you need.

The Top 10 Games of 2013 According To Me

The Top 10 Games of 2013 According To Me

*

Another year, another breakdown of the years best games according to me.

By any reasonable measure, 2013 was a fantastic year for videogames.  Although much attention has been devoted to the launch of next-generation consoles (and I look forward to seeing what they bring) theres no denying that the last-gen boxes were stuffed to the gills with quality software.

And wow, does it feel strange to refer to them as last-gen.

Anyway, I was happy to find myself playing good game after game over the last twelve months, and Ive got to be honest if next year was guaranteed to be as strong as this year, I wouldnt need new consoles at all.

Since 2013 was such a bumper crop of goodness, I had a difficult time picking an overall winner. There were many solid titles, but no single one which was head and shoulders above the rest.  In fact, I think I rearranged the order of this list at least a dozen times and swapped the top three slots even more than that. Honestly, you could rank the final three in any order you like, and Id probably agree.

Also, some readers may note that this list is heavily console-centric, but that was out of necessity.  I know that there were quite a number of notable PC titles deserving of attention, but I wasnt able to get to them due to my desktop computer being a piece of junk.  My hope is that I will be able to include more PC titles next year, but I played as much as I could with the machines I had available.

In any event, dont just skip straight to the bottom please take a look at the very deserving games which precede the winner, and if some arent familiar or there are a few you havent tried yet, give them some consideration. There were so many choice experiences to be had this year, it would be nearly impossible for anyone to have played them all.

And now, with no further ado my top ten games of 2013.

11

Marvel Puzzle Quest iOS/Steam

Okay, I lied. I picked eleven.

Anyway, its been quite a while since an iOS game held my attention for more than five minutes, but Marvel Puzzle Quest has become my new addiction, and I take a hit every chance I get.  While it may appear to be a standard match-three puzzler on the surface, it retains much of the nuance and complexity found in the original Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords. The developers also do a great job of translating the powers of Marvel comic characters into game mechanics, there are constantly rotating events to keep players engaged past the campaign, the rewards and perks flow freely, and its free-to-play status never undermines the integrity of the core design. Its pretty close to being my ultimate iPhone game.

10

New StreetPass Games 3DS

I never had much use for the StreetPass function on my 3DS until this new batch of games came out, but I carried my unit with me religiously once they did.  Although all four (Flower Town, Mii Force, Warriors Way and Monster Manor) suffer from being overly repetitive with their text, they each offer a unique style of gameplay that uses the Miis of fellow 3DS owners in creative ways such as power-ups on a spaceship, or as fellow gardeners nurturing a seed. Light enough to play before bed but rich enough to make me seek out Nintendo Zones or places where gamers might congregate, these titles might seem like a strange pick, but the fact that they made me change my real-world behavior cant be ignored.

9
Devil May Cry  Multi

Real talk: the Devil May Cry series has never been as good as fans want to think it was until DMC3. Ive got respect for that installment, but the work that Ninja Theorys done with DmC is quite possibly the best Dante overall. While it may not require the same level of technically hardcore skill, its a more well-rounded and conceptually interesting game, and it takes the franchise to a whole new level. The art direction is fantastic, the combat engine is totally solid, and the re-imagining of the character, his backstory and the supporting cast was great work. Every aspect is polished and cared for, and it shows.

8
The Bureau: XCOM Declassified - Multi

Its a shame that The Bureau was connected to XCOM, because that link set it up for failure. While it has precious little in common with the source material and might disappoint people wanting turn-based strategy, I found The Bureaus spin on real-time combat to be quite satisfying once I learned the ropes. With creative micromanagement of a three-man squad and special powers which were a blast to use, each battle was intense. Its environments are incredibly rich with the essence of the early 60s, and the story turned out to be a real crackerjack past the halfway point. I would absolutely love to see a sequel, but since the studio has been disbanded that doesnt seem too likely Enjoy this one for what it is, since its probably all were going to get.

7
Saints Row IV - Multi

Ive always been a fan of the Saints Row franchise, but I was painfully disappointed in Saints Row: The Third. As such, I didnt expect much from IV, but I couldnt be happier to have been mistaken -- the development team got themselves back on track in a big way. Open-world games are too formulaic these days and the devs know it, so they energized the adventure with wild superpowers that let players run rampant. IV goes bananas in the best possible ways and its design overhaul is jaw-dropping, but the real key is that it was all done in a way which absolutely makes sense. The writing is miles better than it was last time around, and it all fits together in just the right way. Newcomers to the franchise may think the Saints are just about being crazy, but crazy without structure underneath it isnt any good. As far as Im concerned, Volition absolutely nailed that balance here.

6

Lost Planet 3 - Multi

Im an absolute sucker for strong writing and characterization, and Lost Planet 3 has it in spades. While some were surprised or put off by the sudden shift away from fast action into a more narrative-driven structure, I adored it. It was a rare, mellow pleasure to join space-faring long-haul trucker Jim Peyton on his day-to-day duties, experiencing what it must feel like to be so far from home and missing your family while trying your best to support them. Playing the role of someone who wasnt an invincible lone soldier or lethal space marine was a rare treat, and the writers did a fantastic job in taking the mundane and making it shine.

5
Dragons Crown PS3/Vita

Dragons Crown is the ultimate example of taking an older genre thats been lying fallow and revving it back up for modern sensibilities. The side-scrolling beat-em-up hasnt been deserving of attention to for years, but Vanillaware not only brought it back with a bang, they created what could very well be the finest iteration thats ever existed.  The hand-drawn art is fluidly fantastic and dripping with distinctive style, the depth in game design and character abilities is superb, and the replay value -- traditionally a weakness of the genre -- far outstrips its predecessors thanks to the diversity of classes, numerous side quests, and online cooperative questing.

4
Tearaway - Vita

Out of all the titles I played this year, nothing was fresher or more joyous than this. Media Molecule uses every aspect of the Vitas hardware in interesting, innovative ways that mesh perfectly with the third-person gameplay. Its exceedingly rare when I dont find touch integration or motion irritating in games, but everything Tearaway does is smart, restrained, and infused with whimsy and delight. Theres also no denying that the character and world design are painfully cute, and awarding the player papercraft blueprints to create in the real world was absolute brilliance. If there was ever a poster child for what the Vitas hardware is capable of, this game is it.

3
Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons - Multi

This small, quietly unassuming title came out of nowhere with a gut-punch emotional response and a radical intertwining of game design and narrative. By combining the physical nature of controllers with the way the player controls two characters at the same time, a special form of storytelling was created that could only exist via the electronic medium. In addition, its dark fairytale of a story was conveyed only through gesture and play Not a single word is uttered from start to finish. Succeeding at so many challenges is an incredible achievement from any perspective, and Brothers elegantly demonstrates that theres plenty of room left to explore in the narrative space that has nothing to do with scripting or dialogue.

2
State of Decay XBLA/PC

Despite the flood of zombie games over the last few years, Ive been consistently frustrated at the lack of true survival scenarios until now. State of Decay achieves exactly that, and does it magnificently. By creating an open world and allowing the player to roam free within it, searching for resources, rescuing survivors, and establishing a bulwark against the undead is fantastically gripping. Details such as managing internal strife at home base, assigning the right survivors to the correct tasks, and being in constant fear of character permadeath put it over the top. Going out on a routine supply run is never routine -- getting surprised by a mob of zombies and watching a characters stamina run low as the undead close in is gut-churning. In this state, the stakes feel incredibly high at all times.

1
The Last Of Us PS3

The Last Of Us is a genuine tour de force of writing, characterization, and world design.

Leads Ellie and Joel have one of the best relationships Ive ever seen illustrated in a game thanks to incredibly natural conversations and rich levels of nonverbal expression.  I was also quite taken by the contrasting themes of parental responsibility and independence, and of the way the game examines the difference between doing whats right and doing what you must, not to mention questioning what the definition of right even is.  The supporting cast is just as strong, and each new situation in their harsh quest presents riveting slices of what survival might mean to different people.

Technically, Naughty Dog devotes an unbelievable level of effort towards bringing each ruined location to life, and the environmental storytelling shines through.  Even more impressive is how the hybrid stealth/combat play offers enough twists and surprises to actually sustain its fifteen-hour running time. Balancing tense encounters with quiet moments is a difficult thing, but the developers managed to find the right line better than most.

I never would have expected it given my general lack of affection for Uncharted, but these relatably human characters struggling through an inhuman situation manage to deliver the most memorable experience of the year. And that ending? It rings absolutely true.  Although theres no question that the amount of money and number of people required to create an experience of this sort would not be possible for many studios, the most important element of The Last Of Us is the time and care taken to craft the connection between its two leads, and the lessons learned here will certainly have an effect on future titles to come.

And there you have it, my top ten of 2013.

Agree? Disagree?

Id love to hear your thoughts either way, as well as your own picks. Post a comment and let me know!

The Transatlantic Cyber War Games Are to Start Soon

The Transatlantic Cyber War Games Are to Start Soon

Transatlantic Cyber War Games Are to Start Soon:

newsofcrime.blogspot.com
The UK and United States of America intelligence agencies are getting to conduct transatlantic cyber war games so as to check their resilience to the world cyber attacks. The heads of the 2 countries have started negotiations on the subject will announce that a simulated attack will target banks within the city of London and Wall Street later in 2015.
The simulated war game against the financial sector are allotted with the assistance of specialists of the Bank of england and different financial establishments and coordinated by a replacement joint cyber-cell of the 2 countries. The latter are created by agents from GCHQ and MI5 on the united kingdom aspect and also the NSA and also the FBI on the North American country aspect.

The us and uk leaders dont underestimate the threat of islamist extremists in syria, Iraq and in Europe and also the dangers represented by cyber-warfare. Obama pointed to the urgent and growing danger display by cyber attacks, and also the example was a recent attack on Sony pictures. Previously, the president spoke of the requirement for a shared mission with the participation of the govt. and also the personal sector. Considering that almost all of the critical infrastructure of the united states is closely-held by the personal sector and runs on networks connected to the internet, the conclusion will be created that neither the govt. nor the personal sector will defend the state alone.

Cooperation between the us and also the uk is meant to pool their effort and permit them keep one step ahead of people who ask for to attack. The heads of the states believe that the joint exercises and coaching of the next generation of cyber experts could make sure that the countries have the capability needed to safeguard vital sectors like energy, transport and financial infrastructure from the potential threats.

In the in the meantime, David Cameron has some inquiries to raise Obama and can apparently press him to influence the school giants, as well as Facebook and Twitter, to accentuate their efforts in cooperating with the intelligence agencies, that wish to observe the communications of suspected terrorists. David Cameron has proclaimed his plans a couple of days past to make a stronger legal framework that will enable intelligence agencies to interrupt into encrypted communications of the suspects, however he wants support of the US-based corporations, as well as the most important social media websites.

The Pros and Cons of Continued Development of Early Access Games

The Pros and Cons of Continued Development of Early Access Games

So someone complained on the Folk Tale Steam forums:

"This was the first Early Access I brought, I actually didnt realise it was early access, I just liked the sound of it and clicked straight to pay (I will never make that mistake again). Anyway almost 2 years on, its still not ready, is this usual?

After realising it was early access I wasnt too concerned because I assumed there would be a few months max before it was finished, surely these things are regulated right, how foolish I was?!" [sic]

Click read more to see my reply.

I replied with:

Im not saying Folk Tale is the best game ever but "unfinished" games may mean just that---and these suck---but there are those that are still stuck at versions that are less than version 1.0 and people support those games.

Dwarf Fortress for example is still at v0.40.24 but its widely hailed as one of the best games ever by legions of fans and other reputable gaming websites. It even spawned several webcomics (heres one: http://bronzemurder.timdenee.com/) and repositories of lore (http://www.dfst.org/).

I would say the longer Folk Tale is in development (read: more patches!) the better. I dont want it becoming a Spacebase DF-9. Who would?

There are many games that have been rushed out of Early Access. Quantum Rush for example. Trust me, you dont want that to happen to this game.

Again, Im NOT saying Folk Tale is the "shiz." Im just throwing this out in the open so you guys can see the pros and cons of continued development.

What would you rather have? A game thats rushed out (Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords anyone? How about Spacebase DF-9?) or a game thats playable but with continued support as the devs try to quash several bugs. Even some of my favorite "finished" games do have some bugs. Tarkus squad in Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II: Chaos Rising for example, gets stuck periodically on terrain they tromp through.

Bugs that arent fixed suck yes, I do acknowledge that. But to have this rigid mindset that a game need to be finished as soon as possible and be done with it also has its own disadvantages.

THE LUCASARTS ARCHIVES VOL II Star Wars games to be proud of

THE LUCASARTS ARCHIVES VOL II Star Wars games to be proud of

Something to get out and play after the impending Sithiness of Force Unleashed 2 leaves you screaming like a Rancor keeper who has just had his favourite beast portcullis`d  by some young idealistic oik with paternal abandonment issues and overburdened with chores on his uncles moisture farm ! If only these moisture farmers let their nephews chill and go play with their friends power converters .....

Any way , 5 Incredible Star Wars Titles  , now that`s not a statement that you could use to describe to many modern Star Wars games compilations now is it .

The five incredible titles in THE LUCASARTS ARCHIVES VOL. II Star Wars Collection  are :

  • Star Wars: Rebel Assault
  • Star Wars: Rebel Assault II: The Hidden Empire
  • Star Wars: TIE Fighter Collectors Edition CD-ROM
  • Star Wars: Dark Forces (demo)
  • Star Wars: Making Magic (Multimedia CD-ROM featuring a behind-the-scenes look at the then  new versions of the Star Wars films)

The Rebel Assault Series heralded the CDROM era on pc , and would work awesomely on touch screens like the ipad , joojoo and Libretto W100 if anyone is listening .Hmmmh now there is an idea I may try installing this lot to the W100 to see what happens. The Dark Forces demo alone is more impressive than any latter day Star Wars games such as the  Force Unleashed  series, this is where we were introduced to Kyle Katarn and Dark Troopers, and TIE Fighter , well is the greatest Star Wars game ever written , sorry, what was that ,  yes My Emperor , a rebellion to crush? I`ll hop in my Tyderian and get right on it as soon as I manage to slow my pc down enough to run the game ....
