The Image That You See Here Is Not a Photograph

 photoreal image

You may not believe your eyes but the image above is not a photograph, its just a painting of a non-real person done using airbrush, not Photoshop.

Dru Blair took around 70 hours to paint this beautiful photorealistic image - look at the eyes, skin tones, hair curls.. they look so real.

Dru has the details on how he completed this painting dubbed "Tica" - Photorealism at its best.

The Reality of Playing Persona 5 In Japanese When Youre Not Fluent

The Reality of Playing Persona 5 In Japanese When Youre Not Fluent

Its not an easy time to be a spoiler-sensitive Persona fan. If youre wanting to go into Persona 5 in February with a clear head, there are hashtags, wikis and preview videos to actively avoid (seriously, avoid the wikis!). My initial plan was to be part of the spoiler-free crowd, but when Final Fantasy XV was delayed I decided to give into my Persona 5 impatience and bear the spoilers in order to fill my September gaming void and play a great game. But as someone only studying Japanese rather than fluent in the language, I was quickly reminded that Persona isnt a light JRPG. I found Persona 5s story getting hazier as I spent my time focusing on merely getting through Persona 5 rather than fully and easily experiencing it like I normally would in English. At its core, buying Persona 5 before release may seem like a good idea, but if youre like me and love Personas story, getting it in Japanese when youre not fluent wont give you the same experience the English release.

Its not a complete uphill battle to play Persona 5 in Japanese though. If youve played a Persona game or two, you can probably work how to play Persona 5 at the very least. Same as the other main series Persona games, gameplay is similar enough between each edition that its pretty easy to work out how to play one Persona game if youve played another. Its the same with Persona 5, with the added bonus of it being polite enough to put some of the basic battle controls and main menu interface in English. For dialogue heavy moments, because Persona 5 is such a visual improvement on pre-current gen Persona games, its easier to get context from the visuals making Persona 5 a bit easier for international players. If missing plot intricacies doesnt bother you, mechanical knowledge of Persona and some button mashing through new mechanics is most likely enough to at least get to the end of Persona 5. This is how I played through the first dungeon of Persona 5 and despite wanting to understand more of the story, I was able to have a lot of fun with the battle mechanics and understand just enough of the story for it to be interesting. Dungeons were probably the most stress free part of my dictionary-free run because of the battles and animated cutscenes, so if youre importing this aspect wont be too much of a problem and theyre a good way to have fun with Persona 5.

My Japanese is....(see above)
If Persona 5 was all dungeon crawler and no dialogue, it wouldnt pose as much of a problem to the non-Japanese speaking player. However a lot of Personas core is narrative, with some of the series best and most unique mechanics including Social Links and the new Demon Negotiation using dialogue as an important game mechanic. A lot can be gathered from visual cues, however with Personas characters always having well-rounded personalities and long dialogue scenes, its easy to miss important plot intricacies with little or no Japanese knowledge. With my lower level Japanese, I could gather a few of these intricacies but I did find when speaking to my boyfriend (who is much better at Japanese), there were still a lot of things I missed. I didnt fully understand just how evil the antagonists were because of what I missed in the dialogue and there were developments I really wish I had been able to understand for myself. Its to be expected since Im not fluent in Japanese, but Persona is so largely story-based that I couldnt help but feel like I was missing really important things. Social links are another beast, as I found myself matching words or kanji I knew in dialogue choices when I dont understand whats going on, with mixed success. By the beginning of Persona 5s second dungeon, I found myself pretty nervous as I always wondered if I was missing something important Id been told to do that was vital to the next boss and if Id be sent to game over town because I hadnt been able to understand what to do.

There is hope though. For the patient and for those with an interest in learning Japanese, my trusty picture translator and dictionary method requires me be much more patient, but works in Persona 5. In my new save file, Ive been able to look things up to my hearts content and actually understand whats going on, which makes me feel way happier when I play. It is, however, taking a lot longer; Im not at the first save point yet and its probably been 4 hours in my new save file. But feeling like I know whats going on is important to me, which is what drove me to write this article. Some people wont mind getting a glimpse at Persona 5 without understanding everything, but if you love the details of Personas stories, actually waiting may not be a bad idea for a game like Persona. If you want to understand how truly evil some of the characters are, you may not get that from a bunch of words you cant read and some maniac laughter as much as you think, which is what I found in my first save file. I completely understand the impatience of waiting for such an anticipated and consistently great series, but as I said in my previous article about playing Persona 5 before release, localisations exist because of how much dialogue there is to translate and Persona 5 probably has more than ever.

Playing Persona 5 pre-dictionary was like looking at it through a glass door: I could see the coolness of Persona 5 - the gorgeous visuals, the improved battle system - but I was missing a lot of details and those details are what makes a Persona narrative so hard-hitting. Im going to keep playing Persona 5, but I may abandon my dictionary-free save and take my time learning new words and understanding the story. I cant promise that playing Persona 5 will be cool for people who dont speak Japanese and for those who speak it on a lower level like mine as there will be nuances missed out on unless you approach it with patience. But I also understand for a lot of people, merely playing Persona 5 is what they want and they can live without knowing every detail and I kind of envy that in some ways. No matter when or how you play Persona 5, I encourage everyone as its load screen regularly reminds me to Take Your Time and enjoy the intricate world that is Persona 5 in the way you can have the most fun possible.

You can pre-order Persona 5 for PS3 and PS4 in English or buy the Japanese version at Play-Asia.com!

The fire from the sky still falls Diablo III has not yet launched

The fire from the sky still falls Diablo III has not yet launched

When trying to install the game you get this error message: "The fire from the sky still falls. Diablo III has not yet launched." and a screen that looks like this:

If youre wondering what this error means, because youre trying to install the public beta opening this weekend, it means that you have downloaded the retail version of the game, and the version available for play this weekend is for beta clients only, not with retail clients (which is a slightly different install).

You should be able to access the Diablo 3 beta download from Blizzards page here https://us.battle.net/account/download/index.xml

Note that you need a battle.net account to use it. You can sign up for a free account through this site too.

UPDATE #1 (24/04/2012) : As the public BETA weekend is now over, you will not be able to access the game unless you have been invited to do so with a BETA key.

UPDATE #2 (11/05/2012): Blizzard have announce on their blog that:
We will be unlocking the games installer at 17:01 CEST on May 14. This will allow you to begin installing the game, troubleshoot any issues you run into, download and install the launch day 1.0.1 patch, and be ready to play as soon as the servers come online.
So this error after this date will no longer be a problem.

The vi arrow keys not working in Ubuntu

The vi arrow keys not working in Ubuntu

Most people get this issue of arrow keys not working for vi in Ubuntu. Instead, it displays A, B, C, and D characters.

This is because the default vi in Ubuntu is a vi light version (that is the vim-tiny package). This does not use the arrow keys as you would expect.

If you want the arrow keys to function you have to install the full vim package. By this you not only get the arrow keys working but also other nice features such as colored syntax.

Just installing the vim package should get you fixed up. Try:

sudo apt-get install vim
or
sudo apt-get install vim-full

vim-full will install all the vim related package and the dependencies, that includes gnome libs, etc... if you dont use gnome and just want to fix this issue in the text mode you can also run :

sudo apt-get install vim-runtime

The Undo History of the Windows Notepad should not be Limited

The Undo History of the Windows Notepad should not be Limited

By Segun Odunade

For users of the Windows operating system, the Windows notepad may be very useful such that users can easily create and edit unformatted text. I happen to use this utility a lot for my word document editing because it has an exceptional feature of removing all formatted text file pasted on its interface. For instance, say, you are working on word and you want to copy a specific amount of text from the internet to your document, copying the text directly to word will cause the format you are working on to change, the user is then left with either editing the changes or using the paste special unformatted option on Microsoft word; both options dont always yield optimum solution. The problem with the paste special unformatted option on word in Windows is that it sometimes fails to remove all formatting, which can mess up the whole document. However, copying the text to notepad first will assure the user a clean unformatted text which when copied to word will adjust to what format the user was using. The notepad has its usefulness beyond text editing, however, this blog will focus on the undo functionality of the notepad.

While considering the above mentioned text editing benefits of the Windows notepad, I find it very frustrating that till this day, the notepad can only undo once. This extremely limited undo functionality can give users like me a lot of headache because often times users may want to return several steps back from the changes they have made while editing on notepad.

1. Requirement

The Windows notepad is included in all of Microsoft windows since Windows 1.0 in 1985 [2].

2. Snippet Illustration of the Windows Notepad Undo Problem

1. For instance, if the user types My name is John and I am 50 years old on the notepad interface as shown below in figure 1. This snippet was taken from the Windows 10 Operating System.

Fig 1: Snippet Illustration of the initial text typed by user

2. And the user decides to change John to Adam and 50 to 40, we have:

Fig 2: Snippet Illustration showing text changes made by user

3. If the user decides to go back to the initial state i.e. going back two steps by pressing the undo key control Z. Windows notepad only goes one step back such that only the last change made is reverted.

Fig 3: Snippet Illustration showing notepad not being able to go more than one step back

Assuming the user had forgotten what he or she typed initially or the user had made multiple changes, the information the user needed at that time would have been lost.

3. Likely Cause of the Windows Notepad Undo Problem

One of the likely causes could be that the first versions of the Windows notepad were made to perform only a step back ability of keeping track of users records [1]. Modifying the windows notepad now to accommodate unlimited undo functionality may affect many parts of its source code which would cost the Organization Microsoft more money to implement. Due to the reason mentioned above, the Windows notepad undo problem is a foundational problem.

4. Suggestion

Although, there are now alternatives to the Windows notepad such as notepad++, notepad2 and freeware which are designed and developed by third party organizations. Since this third party organizations have gotten it right, I suggest that Microsoft should adopt one of this text editing applications as a form of software update that overwrites the notepad because most users dont even know this third party text editing applications exist and some of this applications may be difficult to install for non tech-savvy users.

5. Conclusion

The Windows notepad is an essential utility for text editing in the Windows operating system.  The extremely limited undo functionality of the notepad is a fundamental problem has discussed above and updating this utility to include unlimited undo functionality, syntax coloring, code folding, color schemes e.t.c. [2], with a similar and outstanding application will boost the usability of the Windows notepad as a whole.

The Open Secret of Cabal Online Dont know you know or NOT !

The Open Secret of Cabal Online Dont know you know or NOT !

This weekend busy leveling Cabal online. From level 41 push to 52. Now Im able to enter the new map already - Port Lux. Luckily start from beginning my friend told me some basic guide to play this online game.

Ok the trick is like this when you play Cabal online usually you will open full screen but in order to make this trick work you must change to windows mode. Yeah this is the trick that I want to mention here. After you change to windows mode, this trick enable you to autocast magic skill on the monster that you selected. Just select the monster that you want to kill and hold on to the skill shortcut key meanwhile move your mouse cursor to your desktop (out of the game windows) and click on your desktop. So when you click back to the Cabal online windows, you are able to always autocast that particular skill on the monster that you click on it.

Please take note that once you use other skill, then you need to start all over again the steps I mentioned just now. This trick is actually to make it convenient for you to up your magic skill level which choosing the fastest cool down time magic and keep on spam it on monster. In fact remember to up your magic skill to level 9 in order to reduce the cool down time to the shortest.
Just some basic tips for those who are new to Cabal Online like me :) Thanks to my friend Bosanova who provided me this guideline. Hope it helps!
