I was more prepared with a proxy/VPN software during my first trip to China. However, I was careless this time, and went unprepared. During my visit in 2014, I had a VPN/proxy configured to take care of the great China firewall. Just because I wanted to make sure I was still connected to Facebook. Following my Facebook deactivate, this time I was under the impression that this is not needed anymore. I was wrong! A long list of other web sites and services have been blocked in China, in addition to Facebook.

Interestingly, Google (search), Gmail (in basic HTML mode), Skype web beta, and duckduckgo worked with a simple proxy service (such as Eduroam). However, they did not work without them. Still ShareLatex, Skype application, Yahoo search, Amazon AWS, Wikipedia, and Meetup worked even without a proxy.

In addition to Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox (the web site as well as the application), Google+, Blogger, YouTube, and Google Docs did not work at all. It was interesting that, from a foreigners perspective, a list of useful sites were blocked. Yahoo search was not blocked, while even duckduckgo was blocked (unless used with a proxy). Probably duckduckgo is a bigger threat than Yahoo?

P.S: Lately I found Shadowsocks. I am yet to test it.

Take a moment to Google "iOS 7 waterproof". Do it. Its worth it.

Yes. Someone Photoshopped some fake iOS 7 ads to tell people that a software update would make their phone waterproof. And some other people, who may in fact not be as insightful as they possibly could be, believed it. So now thousands of articles saying that, no, a software update will not change the physical properties of your phone.

The Internet is an immensely new, hugely important mode of human communication, but we dont yet know how to use it. People dont understand this about the Internet: It is half lies. At best.

Most people who saw the fake ad read it, smiled, and moved on. A few people, however, believed it. They took their phone in the shower. The device was destroyed. They learned a valuable lesson, in a way that wont soon be forgotten, and all it cost them was a few hundred bucks.

And you know something? Maybe they will be less like my older relatives, who never read anything in e-mail so ludicrous they didnt believe it.

I promise you this. One of these days, someone who trashed their phone will get a message saying vaccines are killers, or a guy in Nigeria wants to give them a hundred million bucks, or that they should quit the chemo for their Stage 3 breast cancer because eating enough lemons will take care of it (yes, real example). Maybe, dare to dream, when this happens they will think about their phone and maybe, just maybe hit Delete. Like they should.

It is a small price to pay for a lesson of such value.

Oops. Sorry. What I meant to say was, its real. You can install iOS 7 on your iPhone and give it to your kids to play in the bathtub. Go try it. You know its true, because you just read it.

yes.... internet censorship means you are on the net ; you are watched and controlled .
at first i want to say that who gave them the right to watch you while you are on the net?
who gave them the right to block every single site only because it have any political or "extra unneeded information" such as wikipedia .
i mean when they made the internet as WWW "WORLD WIDE WEB" thy made it free for all!
it is not only for a political reasons.. i mean dear leaders facebook,youtube and others believe me wont take your chairs!
here in Syria when you set up an internet connection at home it comes with a CD full of proxy programs and VPN tunnels because it just internet wont work!

facebook WAS blocked but now finally you can see the start page when you sign in and when you sign in you can wait for hours and then get errors! without mentioning the fake facebook SSL and stealing your personal data even passwords.
you can find this kind of internet at China , Iran,Syria,Vietnam and many others but not like those. they are wasting the quality of internet for the security.
but now US is going to make an American censorship?
please go to mozilla and start to help!
but you know when governments block sites and pass your privacy  they are really not caring about you .. it is only for the "security reason" or "security routine/protocol". and if you thought it wont hurt you.. well it hurts a lot of other people and it did.......

- You currently dont have any Internet connections and no computers or smartphones. You are proud of being a technological neathandatal

- You are extremely old with no interest in technology and about to exit the planet

- You are living in a fantasy world where you think a large house in the country does not need an Internet connection. Just like in your parents age the quality of the staff is what is important.

- The Bible did not mention the Internet and consequently you dont need it. [Note, other religious texts are available, they also exclude any explicit reference, how strange]



In 2016 best practise would be to have

- A smartphone with an unlimited data plan, ideally for your country and all you regularly travel into

- A home Internet connection, uncapped with at least 30 and ideally over 100 Mbps downstream connection.

- If you make extensive use of Cloud Services, WebHosting ideally 100Mbps+ upstream

- For the home a backup Mobile 4G LTE connection in case the Fibre Drops

Other Considerations

In the UK it might be difficult to find an uncapped PAYG or Pay Monthly plan for mobile data. Even if it says uncapped there may be a small asterisk saying, uncapped means please dont exceed 15GB per month. As a counter example, Marcus recently uploaded 7000 GB to a Cloud provider in 3 days, just as a test, at home in Switzerland. This could not be achieved in the UK via any Mobile or Land Fibre connection. Hmm. Taking a step backwards in life is always painful.


Summary
Stepping back below uncapped 100Mbit/sec download, ultra low latency Internet, is almost your only choice in the UK, is going to be a tough one. To be continued.
