Fourth Android vulnerability detected, Is it safe to use?

One when another vulnerability in golem has raised numerous questions about its safety. golem users square measure currently, thinking is it safe to use or not?

Researchers from Trend small, a security firm, have uncovered one more golem mediaserver vulnerability in its versions a pair of.3 to 5.1.1, that they need same, may permit attackers to run their code with an equivalent permissions that the mediaserver program already has as a part of its traditional routines.
However, Google has patched the vulnerability via the golem Open supply Project (AOSP).

According to the researchers, the vulnerability comes with the AudioEffect, a element of the mediaserver program. It uses associate unrestrained variable that comes from the consumer, that is sometimes associate app. so as to attack, the assaulter should convert the victim to put in associate app that doesnt need any needed permissions, giving them a false sense of security.

Since the mediaserver element deals with plenty of media-related tasks as well as taking footage, reading MP4 files, and recording videos, the privacy of the victim is also in danger. Devices with custom-made  versions of golem however with no modification created to the mediaserver element also are affected, they same.

The researchers have steered that so as to dam the threat, the golem users will transfer Trend small Mobile Security (TMMS), which may discover threats making an attempt to use this vulnerability and running any of the eventualities conferred. they will conjointly boot their device mistreatment safe mode to uninstall the malicious app.

We conjointly suggest that device makers patch their devices often to stop their users from littered with attacks that use this vulnerability, they explained.

its same that the new flaw is kind of like those 3 alternative major vulnerabilities in Androids mediaserver element that detected recently. CVE-2015-3823 may permit attackers to lure phones in endless reboots and ANDROID-21296336 might render devices silent. Lastly, CVE-2015-3824 dubbed Stagefright may be accustomed install malware through a multimedia system message

One after another vulnerability in Android has raised various questions about its safety. Android users are now, thinking is it safe to use or not?
Researchers from Trend Micro, a security firm, have uncovered yet another Android mediaserver vulnerability in its versions 2.3 to 5.1.1, which they have said, could allow attackers to run their code with the same permissions that the mediaserver program already has as part of its normal routines.
However, Google has patched the vulnerability via the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).
According to the researchers, the vulnerability comes with the AudioEffect, a component of the mediaserver program. It uses an unchecked variable which comes from the client, which is usually an app. In order to attack, the attacker must convince the victim to install an app that doesnt require any required permissions, giving them a false sense of security.
Since the mediaserver component deals with a lot of media-related tasks including taking pictures, reading MP4 files, and recording videos, the privacy of the victim may be at risk. Devices with customized versions of Android but with no modification made to the mediaserver component are also affected, they said.
The researchers have suggested that in order to block the threat, the Android users can download Trend Micro Mobile Security (TMMS), which can detect threats trying to use this vulnerability and running any of the scenarios presented. They can also reboot their device using safe mode to uninstall the malicious app.
We also recommend that device manufacturers patch their devices regularly to prevent their users from suffering from attacks that use this vulnerability, they explained.
It is said that the new flaw is quite similar to those three other major vulnerabilities in Androids mediaserver component that detected recently. CVE-2015-3823 could allow attackers to trap phones in endless reboots and ANDROID-21296336 may render devices silent. Lastly, CVE-2015-3824 dubbed Stagefright can be used to install malware through a multimedia message

The one that took a while didnt it

The one that took a while didnt it

Well the reports of my death are highly exaggerated. Or rather, not so much, as I died a lot lately but that is not what I meant and you know it.

I should probably fall in line with all the other bloggers out there and pretend that I am slowing down, going to do something different and stopped playing WoW but what I actually did was start several new projects. New things that are quite fun doing (most of the time) and require more time than I first thought.

Part one, obviously, is still playing my main. Koch is going raiding and is still working on his 100 mounts. Except I cannot be bothered to do the argent tournament dailies at the moment, even though that would only be 30 more days and it would finish off the 100 nicely. I do try and pop over to the Brunhildar village every day, hoping against hope to find a shiny polar bear in a little cloth bag, instead of a few snowballs, some rancid Jedi-cheese or some water.

There is also still Zul Gurub. A fine area in the north of Stranglethorn and part of the complimentary troll instance that is due every expansion (you know .. like Zul Gurub.in vanilla and Zul Aman in The Burning Crusade and Zul Frost in Wrath of the Lich King. Oh wait I was not supposed to give out secrets about the expansion of patch 3.3.4.5.2.6.1.a? Forget I said anything). In theory both the raptor boss and the tiger boss are the proud owners of a rare mount. If they had only learnt that handing it over would mean an end to the senseless murder of their friends and countrymen I would already have moved on. As it is we are currently at a quote of 48 to none against me.

And there is raiding. Were still playing Icecrown Citadel every Wednesday and it forms the highlight of my week. You know I actually enjoy raiding on my little tanky-boi. Of course I have to admit that I do not quite like ICC as much as I liked Ulduar and I think I would like to go back one of these days and just trundle around in it and see what happens. Kill Yoggy one of these days? Yeah Id really like that.

Part two, not so obviously, was playing my second favourite tank my little druid. Shes coming along nicely now, raiding in ICC every second week and weve finally managed to kill Saurfang on an Alt Raid. Which was good. Except I got to raid as dps and I cant say I like it.

Now this requires a bit more explanation, I think. I can appreciate that every class is basically a dps class until you get to the endgame (several footnotes and explanations are in order, but bear with me and wait for Part four). Playing a druid as a dps class does not appeal to me very much this is partly due to the rather complicated sequence of bleeds, the energy mechanic of rogues and kitty-cats that I dont particularly enjoy and so on and so forth. There are always moments when this is just cool, though. I do run add-ons that notify me of new high scores for damaging attacks and blowing something up in two goes just has a certain satisfying crunch to it as well (wait for part three, if you could).

In the endgame I pretty much switched all my characters to a tanking main-spec and a dps off-spec at best. The bear has its own strengths and weaknesses (interrupting frostbolt on Lady Deathwhisper, says you? Ha, says I!) and of course so do the paladin and the deathknight and the warrior. Of the three, the dps off-spec of the cat is the most complicated for me, though. Several bleeds and self-buffs to juggle, a consistent energy regeneration struggle and no AoE abilities worth mentioning. If only the spec made up for this complexity by insane dps or super-high numbers on every third rotational pass. But sadly no its just a steady ticking of damaging bleeds, slowly draining the life out of your enemy. I dont like it very much.

Worse when I got to raid ICC yesterday it was also quite horribly boring. On Marrowgar I had to move from fires on the ground and otherwise tried to optimize my rotation picking up after each bonestorm. On Lady Deathwhisper I had the pleasure of staying on the boss, first bringing down the mana-shield, then beating up the boss herself. It is the best role for me as continuous target changing would make my dps even less impressive, but it basically meant I stood still and tried to optimize my rotation. On the gunship battle I got to use a cannon which still amuses me, but then sadly had the same annoyance on Saurfang again. Stand in one location, dont bother switching targets to the blood beasts and generally try not to mess up my rotation. Thats it.

No juggling threat, no watching for debuffs on the off-tank, no pre-emptively using cooldowns when the healers had to deal with more trouble, no stunning bloodbeasts, no keeping an eye on the threat meter, no spamming heroic strike when rage is above a certain value, falling back to a more simple sequence of events below. It was just meh compared to the thrill of tanking.

I dont know Ill try it again, of course, and maybe next time with a different class, to see if smashing hits with a big axe make everything more interesting but dps-ing was not really for me.

Disclaimer: I had a lot of fun during the raid but that came from chat and teamspeak, not the engaging game-design as such.

Part three has taken the most time out of my schedule lately. And I admit I started doing it all because of big numbers and DPS. Which ... err does not sound all that clever after part two, but Booyaah! playing a mage is completely different.

See I started a new alt. Had a bit of room still, so there is now a spacegoat mage-girl running around Azeroth, decked out in heirlooms with a mad glint in her eye and a pyroblast at the ready. And its fun!

I mean if I dont miss the pyroblast. I get to blow stuff up with fire and then with more fire! None of that wussy slowing and snaring and freezing and things a hot girl has to use hot spells!

She is currently burning down the forest in Stranglethorn an old favourite quest area of mine for the sheer killability of it all. Kill things, kill their daddies, kill their mommies and then their elder brothers who joined the army. With fire! Its brilliant.

Now I admittedly am not very good at this being a squishy in a sissy robe yet, but Im working on it and enjoying it. And it seems Im not alone. A lot of people seem to have abandoned their mains lately, going back to more relaxed playing times or more alts and such. The auction house is dealing in twink items again a market that was almost dead for a while after ICC came out. There are frogs that need to be sold, and  patterned bronze bracers and blue pearls.

Well and then there was project four. I stumbled across Pugging Pally a while ago. At first I thought there was a masochist at work. Then I played on for a bit without giving it much thought. Then I still thought there was a masochist at work, but I considered giving it a go. And of course I ended up doing the exactly same thing dont tell me you expected anything else after the long-winded introduction.

So I rolled a healer. A paladin healer, in fact, because I think it is the most durable and aggressive healer class I can currently think of. I mean you actually get to rush in and judge light on your groups target and when youre there you might as well plop down a consecration. And you get to wear plate which is nice, because I have all those plate heirlooms already. Okay they are useless heirlooms for a healer and I should buy the mail stuff, but I refuse. I will not be a dress-wearing paladin. Hmm. I actually did put on all those cloth items with intellect on and such, but the point still stands I am a mighty paladin and I will not wear shoulders or chest armour that is not plate and gives +10% experience. Or rather I would if I could afford the mail ones, but I cant so I wont.

There that summed it up nicely.

So anyway I had to level the poor little thing to level 15 traditionally swinging a big enchanted hammer at everything that looked at me funny in the name of healing and the light. Which worked fine.

Then I got to level 15 and got to join my first instance group. Not entirely surprisingly it turned out to be Ragefire Chasm and it was with a great tank and decent dps and a pleasant cruise through the whole thing except sometimes a tad nerve-wracking because I really have no idea how to heal and the tank pulled appropriately large groups to generate enough rage. Clever man orc but boy that was scary. Almost nearly got all the way to level 16 as well. And Im still going strong. I will learn how to heal. I seriously want to. Its an entirely scary business (and I may possibly have tanked one or two mobs by pulling healing aggro and then just continuously healing myself instead of doing the sensible thing and run to the tank screaming) but I shall not be defeated!

Soon. Soon I will be level 16 and then the good stuff starts. Err or so I hope.

This healing addons (I downloaded healbot, because I could remember someone mentioning it its not simple and Im not sure I like it) are a weird business as well. But we shall see. Its all under control. So far.

Beats grovelling at those blue girls for a bear anyway.

The future of computing as I would like to see it

The future of computing as I would like to see it

This diagram represents how I see the future of computing.

First we have an online service where we store our data. This would hold our e-mail, pictures, documents, videos, music, etc.

We access our data through web applications. Take Google Docs for example. Currently Google hosts both the application and the data. I would like to see that come to an end. In my model I would log into my Google Docs and set up an account. I would give Google Docs the URL of my web storage server and then Google Docs would give me a unique private key. I would simply highlight this key and copy it into my computers memory. I would then log into my web storage site and select that I want to share my document data. I would paste the private key provided by Google Docs into my storage interface and receive a unique private key from the storage server. I would provide this unique private key back to Google as authorization.

Behind the scenes Google would contact the web storage server, tell them whos account it wants to access, give it both its own private key that is unique to my Google Docs account, and provide the private key that is unique to the storage server. With both of these keys the web storage server can be confident that it is talking to the correct server that I have authorized to access my documents.

With the trust between the two servers setup I could use Google Docs to modify my documents.

I could repeat this process for different online applications. Files would be saved with open standards so that I can be guaranteed that any application on the web can reliably read and write to them.

I could even use two providers for the same service. I could switch back and forth between using Googles picasaweb and Flickr, for example. There is no reason why only one application would need to be tied to a file type.

If down the road Microsoft comes out with a better online application for modifying documents I could go in to my storage service and deny Google access and go through the process of allowing Microsoft. At any point I could ditch Microsoft and go with another service provider.

Likewise, if I want to change my storage provider I should be able to import all my data to a local file and then upload it to a new provider.

Both the web applications and the data should always be synched up to our primary computers. This way if we dont have an internet connection we can still use the application to modify our data, and the next time the computer comes online it will all synch back up. Googles Gears application already allows for application and data synchronization for offline use, and thats exactly how I envision this working.

The benefits to this are:
  1. No vendor lock-in.
We are free to change providers at any time. It is not like currently where one must choose Microsoft Office because it is the only application suite that can reliably open and close the .doc format which is the document format.
  2. Access to data from anywhere with an Internet connection.
You no longer have to carry around a thumb drive or go through any such hassle. Your data is available from almost anywhere.
  3. Enhanced data persistence
Computer crashes will no longer cause you to lose any of your work.
  4. Enhanced data security.
A lot is made of the security problems of data existing on the cloud. I believe that you are better served with your data in the hands of a team of professionals than in yours. The average PC user is simply the largest security hole that exists today. As long as the average user is in charge of their data, the average users data is vulnerable. Google is more likely to keep your data secure than you are.
  5. OS independence.
Whether you are using Windows, Mac, Linux, your cell phone, game console or any other device, all you need is an Internet connection and a browser to get to your content.
  6. Cheaper computers.
Because most of the hard work is being done by the application server, your computer no longer needs a lot of ram and processing to run your applications. You just need enough resources to run your web browser.
This is cloud computing at its best and I believe that we will be seeing technology continue to move in this direction over the coming years. The development of Googles Chrome OS will be the first of many major steps towards this model.

The Twilight Hammer really is in for it now

The Twilight Hammer really is in for it now

This post is a response to The Eleventh Hour challenge/fun. Ill try and ramble about the past, present and future of Darkwhisper gorge. Considering my normal posting style is not exactly known for its roleplaying aspects - consider this a first. Lets see what cometh of it, shall we?

Alright. So you are here to learn, arent you? Sit down then and shut up. An old friend of mine has told me you had some trouble with the demonic presence here in Desolace? Ran into a fistful of Burning Blade supporters as well, I take it, and now morale is low, the booze is out and it all looks like a damned dustbowl of an area?

See the bright side: Aristta thought it would be a good idea to send an old dwarf down here to show you what its all about. Means at least one thing. I brought enough Shimer Stout to cheer you lads up a little.

There is a downside as well, of course. This is Desolace. It is a damn dustbowl. But if you manage to listen up for a while youll be heading off to the next front in a few weeks time. Youll be ready to enter the first stronghold of the Scarlet Crusade or start working on the Gorishi infestation down in the south.

Now about those cultists...

Youve all been fighting all your life. You know what to do, you know how to react. You possibly even remember to keep your healers alive - although they do look a bit sissy in their silly robes. So what could an old dwarf like me possibly tell you about?

Well... I can tell you about history. Ancient history, really. See, back when I was a wee little lad with hardly any armour to my name and still lusting for gold and a stout dwarven girl to take home I was worried about everything as well. I was afraid of places, got scared by dinosaurs chewing on my friends and terrified by an ancient female iron golem in some caves under the Badlands.

Of course, back then I was willing to travel to the ends of the world as well, at the whims of just about anyone. Take this little goblin in Ungoro, for instance. He sent me off to bring news about a prime bath location to an aquaintance of his in Winterspring. The other end of the world really. But for a bag of silver and a pat on the back ...

Anyway, I digress. I made my way there, met a lovely dwarven girl as well. A lass called Donova Snowden. She was apparently investigating the special powers of the local hot springs - and who am I to refuse a lady, especially when she thoroughly wants to investigate steaming hot water? Still got an old faded picture of her right here, look.

She sent me off to do some exploration for her as well - mentioned something about having to recover the right attire for her investigation of the hot springs, and would I mind checking out a place called Darkwhisper Gorge in the south.

Darkwhisper Gorge, eh?

You would not believe how much I was waggling my eyebrows whenever she mentioned that name. Sounded very promising.

Didnt turn out to be quite that exciting when I got there... or rather... a completely different kind of exciting.

You see, Darkwhisper Gorge is infested by demons. Lots of demons. They are crawling all over the place. You think Mannoroc Coven is bad? Childsplay, really. But the nice dame asked for an exploration, so explore I did. Probably cost me 20 years of my life and Im sure a few hairs on my beard turned white.

When you first get there it just appears a little strange. Snow suddenly ends and its looking warm and sooty and smells of ash and brimstone. Bit like the entrance to good ol Ironforge, I suppose.

Of course, its not quite the same. Turns out the area is filled to the brim with precious metals. Hmm... now that still does sound like Ironforge...

As much thorium mines as a dwarf could wish for. However, the area is not empty. Now just like they taught you in basic training, its always a good idea to make sure you can live through a fight - or at least make sure someone gets away to bring the information home, while you stand there and make sure they are not harmed. Hows a lone dwarf going to do that?

Yes?

Anyone?

*sigh*

Well do what any other proper army does and go and get reinforcements, obviously. So I went home and came back, with my partners and a sissy robewearer and one of those night-elf fellows with a bow and some pointy sticks.

Our plan was to get to the story behind Darkwhisper. To make sure we explored each and every corner and fished up any information we could find.

And just where did you get that picture from?

Alright. We even went fishing. There is a rather large pool down there. And it is infested by demon fish! Demon fish I tell you. Although in fairness, they probably just look like any other fish by the light of day, but in the perpetual gloom down there? With ash raining down on you? Looks a hellalot like demon fish.

Now that is more like it. A cave entrance, you see? Illuminated by pale blue torches, burning bright enough to shimmer through the sooty atmosphere. I can tell you now - we never dared enter that cave. Turned right back, there and then.

Those demons I told you about? They hounded us all the way back to the entrance of Darkwhisper Gorge. Stopped cold as soon as we ran out in the snow. Ha! Noticed that? I sometimes wonder if thats the only reason Ironforge has no demons around.

Any of you from Teldrassil? Well as far as I remember, there are Satyr running wild just outside the gates of Darnassus. Stormwind? Warlocks with the fiendish minions all over the place.

But Ironforge, Dun Morough and Loch Modan are as clean and clear as can be. No demons around our towns! And as I said.. I sometimes wonder if thats not just because of all the snow. Seems to keep demons at bay.

Now, I was trying to teach you something though, wasnt I?

Well then... the important lesson is that it doesnt matter how often you get maimed by demons in your life. With each time youll just come back wiser, stronger and more prepared. As long as your spirit is strong and youre willing to give it another go, youll just be able to come back.

And as you get stronger, you also have more success with the ladies *winks*. See, I went back to Darkwhisper Gorge this week. Mainly to drop of a bag of gold for some ransom. But thats another story. Met up with Donova again, and let me tell you - she looks just as good as she did way back then. See?

Now the demons in there arent even that much of a threat any more. If anything they seem a bit unorganized. Hardly worth the trouble, unless, of course, they have to stand right next to a valuable mining location.

This one girl, she seemed to be the head demon in there. Head demoness? Demon-queen? Doesnt matter, really. Never even offered me a pact, she did. I felt way put off. S not the weirdest thing I found in there, though. Someone seems to actually live in there. Someone friendly. Good chap, who shown an honest interest in Mining.

But seriously, the worry and despair are gone. That area is something I dont fear any more. And youll surely feel the same, soon. Dont give up with those Cultists in Mannoroc. Youll overcome them and ... well ... kick some demon butt.

You know, thinking about Darkwhisper made me realize... Ive never gone back to that Cave. The one with the blue fires? I still wonder what it leads to. Might have to go there one of these days again, when I get another day off.

Heh.

Just because Im older than you doesnt mean I get to sit at a fire with an ale all day long. There are still things need to be killed and sissy priests need protecting. Nothing changes, in the long run.

But you know, once this business in Northrend is all covered and once that other King is done playing war, maybe Ill get a few days. Pick up a few brave souls and walk back to Darkwhisper. Try and find out of there really is a path to the World Tree from the scorched Caves of Winterspring.

With a bit of luck, itll all just lead through the mountains, over a pile of gold and straight to a pleasant nightelf meadow. Something like this, really.

Yeah flowers. I wouldnt mind a bed of flowers once in a while. Might even get to bring Donova there.

The file extension WD3 what it contain

i got a file in .WD3 extension ,  many questions in my mind

i noticed there`s a file "Descr.WD3" in each folder....
what is this file and how can i view his content?

or should i delete it??
So at last find an answer

Descr.wd3 files reside in each directory Offline Explorer creates and contain information regarding all downloaded files in the directory:
- file name
- original file URL
- date of the last modification on Web server (to check for updates)
- file MIME type as it was returned by Web server (this is useful for offline browsing)
- a sign, if a .primary file was created or not.

Although all these files could be deleted, it is not recommended because this may make Web site updates and offline browsing less reliable.

The Tale of Anita Sarkeesian or How Geek Culture Lost Its Mind and Can It Be Gotten Back

The Tale of Anita Sarkeesian or How Geek Culture Lost Its Mind and Can It Be Gotten Back

Let the shouting commence!
Due to a combination of burnout and health problems, I havent been blogging for a while. Now that everyone has forgotten I exist, I am starting again, in order to fix a serious problem: I am still employable in the game industry.

Look. Im 43 and I have 2 kids. The game industry doesnt want me, and, if it ever does, itll just be to make me do 80 hour weeks and ruin whats left of my life. So Im going to solve the problem by saying things that make the game industry think I stink like old fish.

And, if you want to piss off gamers, here is the number one thing you can say: "Women are human beings, and they deserve to be treated with respect."

And no, Im not about to talk about Penny Arcade. Theres a much bigger, more significant ongoing story thats been going on since I started my blogging sabbatical. So lets talk about Anita Sarkeesian!

(If you know this whole story and dont want to wallow in the absurdity once again, just skip to the last section. But I think the tale is surreal enough to merit multiple tellings.)

Anita Who Now?

I really think this story is fascinating, and, despite all the virtual ink that has been spilled on it, there are fresh things to say. So heres some background to the story. Its a good one.

Anita Sarkeesian made videos on YouTube for her channel, Feminist Frequency. Its what youd expect: Analysis of popular culture from an "Are women in it? How are they portrayed?" kind of perspective.

They were decent videos. A little dry. Some people criticized them for not being up to the LOFTY quality standards of YouTube (chuckle). The standard, young male, testosterone-poisoning, Make Me a Sammich crowd that gets mad whenever women are discussed in any context, tended to come out and shout, but other than that, it was pretty quiet.

Then Sarkeesian did a Kickstarter, to fund a series of videos called Tropes vs. Women in Video Games. The idea: To prove that women in video games might, get this, not be portrayed in a well-rounded, three-dimensional way (when they are portrayed at all).

When I heard about this Kickstarter, I kind of shrugged, because women being portrayed badly in video games? Duh. Might as well have a Kickstarter to prove the moon exists. But anyone who takes time to call out game designers for crappy, hack storytelling is doing The Lords Work, so I hoped she did well.

Instead, She Pulled In a Fortune

Turns out, she struck a nerve. As obvious as her conclusion was, a lot of people were thrilled to pony up bread to make some noise about it. And good for them. Her goal was $6000. She pulled in over $150000. Because, it turns out, fixing even an obvious problem involves people making some noise about it.

The Kickstarter was a phenomenal success.

And the testosterone-poisoning crowd LOST THEIR MINDS.

Tales Of Moral Courage In Video Gaming

If you ever have any doubt that nerd culture has some nasty, toxic issues with women, the harassment Anita Sarkeesian received should dispel them entirely. Her Wikipedia page lists all of the abuse she received, but the most infamous example is the anonymous and gruesome Flash game where people could beat her face.

Folks, this is beyond trolling. This is profound psychological damage. This is Invest In a Bulletproof Vest territory. That Sarkeesian persisted in the face of all of this shows her virtual balls are well bigger than mine. I would have hid under the bed and never come out.

This is surreal! Its a Monty Python sketch. And heres the thing! What was she trying to do?

Was the trying to eliminate Twinkies? Cancel My Little Pony? Make some giant James Bond laser and blow up Mount Rushmore? No! She was trying to make some lousy YouTube videos! To prove an obvious thing everyone knows!

(You know how everyone knows it? Because, in every one of the million discussion threads that bring out people to put down Sarkeesians work, the arguments are always: Its not a problem. Its the creators right. Theres no need to make this video. The production values suck. Women dont spend enough on games to be considered. [WRONG!] Nobody ever says her actual conclusion is wrong. For the same reason there arent impassioned arguments about whether adding two and two gets you four.)

So the money came in, and, unlike certain other Kickstarters I could mention, the promised product is forthcoming.

Videos That Exist!

As of this writing, three of the videos are out. Theyre exactly what you would expect. Carefully considered, methodical in their arguments, decently made, a bit dry, with occasional sparks of true brilliance.

I often see guys online saying that her videos are pointless and dont prove anything. This is how I know that they never bothered to, you know, watch them. Dont believe me? Go to this one and skip to 7:40. If anyone has come up with a better display of the tired hackwork that so often passes for video game story-telling, PLEASE send me a link.

One thing youll note about her video pages is that commenting is disabled. Something that is inexplicably considered a horrible crime by the testosterone crowd. Setting aside that YouTube comments are the most useless way to make an argument about anything anywhere, I think it should be a rule that once the death threats start coming in, you are allowed to start controlling the channels by which people communicate with you. Duh doy.

(You will note, for example, that having YouTube comments disabled has affected my ability to give my opinion not at all.)

Now On To the Main Question

So thats the prologue. Nerd culture, as a whole, engaging in the biggest over-reaction/freakout in the history of freakouts. Whenever these videos are discussed anywhere, go to the comments and read the rage. (Which, you will find, is not unanimous, but not hard to find at all.) This, again, is far beyond mere trolling. Sarkeesian has poked a huge, sensitive nerve in the entire culture.

Now here is the thing, the point, the puzzle, the question at the heart of the whole mess ...

Why are guys so mad about this?

Y U So Mad?

(All nerd-based blog posts are federally required to contain 5% Pony content by weight.)

Its a handful of YouTube videos, saying an obvious thing in a quiet way. Why the rage? Why any rage at all? Why not just go on to the next video?

The obvious reason surely has much to do with this: Humans are naturally loss-averse. In other words, people with privileges (the privilege in this case being young men having video games made to please them and only them) get very angry when those privileges might be taken away. Some people just never learned to share their toys.

This is a lot of that, but I think theres more. I think its a real mystery, and, as much as its been discussed, I think its important to prod it a bit more. (Or maybe Im wrong. Maybe it really is that simple. But its at least worth thinking about, when Im not going on about esoteric design issues or making fun of the stupid new Star Trek movie that was stupid.)

I have a self-serving reason: my two daughters are some of the biggest nerds in nerdworld, and I want them to grow up in the sort of geek culture where they can say things and have opinions and write games without getting harassment or death threats.

So, if you missed my blog, its back. Ive missed a lot of good stuff to talk about, and this is one issue I want to talk about a lot more. And thank you, Anita Sarkeesian, for tolerating a lot of garbage to say True Things. And hopefully make game stories better. Because its needed.

Am I unemployable yet?

The Super Robot Wars Series Its finally in English but what is it

The Super Robot Wars Series Its finally in English but what is it

A few days ago something happened many people never expected to see -- Super Robot Wars has officially released in English! Now, why is this a big deal? Well thats simple. Its because it is a game that basically cannot be released in the West (but now theres ways around it)! So, why is it cant be released in the west, and what exactly IS this game? Well, let me explain.

The Super Robot Wars series is a Banpresto game that has been going on for many years now, with so many games that it would be impossible to list them all here (well, not impossible, but it would take too much time). Its a tactical role playing series, similar to other well known games like Fire Emblem, where you build a team of different characters, but rather than playing as units on foot, everyone is in some sort of giant robot. These robots and characters are taken from a wide verity of anime, manga, and game series, and the game gives you multiple ways to customize them as you battle your way across the story. You can buy and equip different equipment, you can upgrade and unlock different weapons and abilities, you can upgrade the different stats of each unit, and you can even unlock skills and level up the units pilots as well -- which can also be in different mechs unlock as the story goes on as well. Theres a lot of dept to this system, and some games in the series take it even further by allowing you to group up units and have sub pilots, and theres also support attacks.

As for the main gameplay itself, maps are grid based with you moving each unit during your turn, and you are given different options on what each unit can do during their turn. Example, in the brand new SRWV characters can use spirit actions to buff themselves or activate other special moves, but when close to an enemy you also have the ability to attack them using a wide verity of weapons. Mechs typically have a wide verity of both ranged and melee attacks, and each one is effective against different types of enemies (some weapons have an ammo limit as well). The size of enemies you are fighting matters as well, and depending on what weapons the enemies are using it will determine if they can counter attack you or not. Example, you could use melee attacks on a giant long ranged cannon enemy, but that enemy would not be able to fire at you with such close range. This same concept applies for you as well, so when are are being attacked you are given even more options on how to respond. Rather than just using attacks, you can use a defensive state to try to block some damage, or you can ready yourself to evade. Its also possible to pull in other units as support if they are close by and have the abilities unlocked, which can sometimes be key to surviving.  On top of all of this, battleship units can fight and support your main units as well, and you can even recall units for repairs. Once you have finished your turn, the enemy will take theirs (which is where the counter attack and defensive options come into play), and then the game will switch back to you again. This is pretty typical of tactical games, but what isnt typical is how the mission structure plays out.

Rather than simply having a main goal in each map, the game also throws an optional objective at you. Completing these extra objectives will unlock "SR Points" that will reward you with extra money for earning them, but at the same time the game will get harder or easier based on how many SR Points you have. Get a lot of SR Points? Game is going to get harder for you. Start failing the optional objectives after? Game will go back to normal mode. Its a way the game tries to scale based on your skill, but it can be stopped by simply ignoring SR Points once in awhile. Theres also split paths throughout the adventure, and multiple secrets to find and unlock. Thankfully the games have a New Game + mode where you can keep on playing to see what you missed.

Now hold on, does this seem familiar to anyone else? Well, if youre a Nintendo fan it should. Although Super Robot Wars has never been released in the West due to all the licensing issues (as it contains series like Gundam, Full Metal Panic, Macross, Evangelion, Code Geass, Zoids, and many, MANY, others -- depending on the game), "versions" of it have made it here. Starting on the GBA, Super Robot Taisen OG (Original Generation) has been released here. OG1 and 2 were both released on the GBA, and they follow their own stories with original characters and mechs that were both created for the OG games and have appeared in mainline SRW games. In other words, some characters and mech designs may appear to be similar to that of other series, but they are characters all their own thus there are no legal issues. Of course despite us getting 1 and 2, the following games were never released in the West -- nor were the remakes of 1 and 2. Instead what was released here after was quite a bit different.

Endless Frontier is a more traditional turn based RPG set within the SRWOG storyline, but its history and legacy are both a lot more complicated than that. While it is a SRWOG game (set within another universe), the game itself is a sort of sequel to another Banpresto title called "Namco X Capcom." Yes, thats right, the Namco and Capcom crossover tactical RPG that we never got. This game was in a similar style to SRW when it came to its tactical gameplay and crossover based storyline, but rather than picking attacks and watching the attacks play out in a cutscene, it introduced a new action like system where you press different buttons to use combo attacks. Each attack was set to a different button, and the goal was to dish out as much damage as possible during each turn. This is the very same battle system that was adapted for the Endless Frontier system, and its one that 3DS fans may know as well (which Ill explain shortly). Besides using a version of the battle system from Namco X Capcom, the lead characters Reiji and Xiaomu also appear in the Endless Frontier story along with some other characters and crossover characters. Basically, Endless Frontier is a side story to the SRWOG story, that takes place after Namco X Capcom, and is important to the overall SRW story -- as well as to Project X Zone.

As mentioned above, the combat system from Namco X Capcom and Endless Frontier may sound familiar to 3DS players. Well, thats because its a version of the one seen in the 3DS series "Project X Zone." Although Endless Frontier did receive a sequel that was exclusive to Japan, the 4th title in this line of games (or technically second mainline title) was released in the west, and so was the 5th. Project X Zone takes place after Endless Frontier 2, and once again plays a lot like a mainline SRW game. Its a tactical role playing game, it has its own original characters, Reiji and Xiaomu are back, two of the main characters from Endless Frontier are here, and like NxC before it, it features a wide verity of characters from different series. Again, its the same style of crossover game as SRWs mainline, but with characters from Namco, Capcom, and SEGA instead (and Nintendo in Project X Zone 2).  Still with me? Hopefully, thats a yes.

Although a few of the Original Generation games made it overseas, and Project X Zone happened, the main Super Robot Wars series was still too much of a legal mess to ever be brought over. Some games were automatically not allowed here due to the inclusion of the Macross series (which is one of the biggest legal messes youll ever come across when it comes to entertainment), while others would have still been difficult due to the amount of crossovers in them. While series like Gundam and Cross Ange (which is in SRWV) wouldnt be an issue (considering Banpresto is a part of Namco which is a part of Bandai which owns Sunrise as well), series like Space Battleship Yamato 2199 and Getter Robo wouldnt be as easy. Considering this series isnt one that is well known in the west and is more for a niche audience, it may not even be worth paying for the licenses at all. Really theres a lot of reasons why this series hasnt been released here, and it may never be... But wait, then what was all of this about? Are you saying this game still hasnt been released in the west? Well, yeah. Yeah I am.

Super Robot Wars V is the latest entry in the mainline series, and it has not been released in the west -- instead it was released in Asia! Rather than dealing with all the legal issues, the game was fully translated into English, and released in Asia instead. The game still features a Japanese dub, but all menus and text are fully in English, and the cutscenes are subtitled as well -- the same as how things were handled in Project X Zone 1 and 2. Of course the down side to this is some funky grammar errors may pop up from time to time, but in general the translation is done very well (and A LOT better than SRWOG Moon Dwellers which was also released in Asia with English last year). Also since the game is on PS4 anyone who is willing to import it can play it, but you would need a second PSN account if you want to purchase the optional DLC.

So, now the question is... Is this a series you should get into? The answer to that is, it really depends on  you. First of all, unless you know Japanese you cannot experience the entire thing. Super Robot Wars V is the start of a brand new series within the mainline titles (so English speakers do not need to worry about the past), but if you want to see all of stories you have no choice but to play the vast majority of them in Japanese (I say vast majority as there are fan translation projects out there). Secondly, its going to depend on what types of games you like, and if you know the characters or not. If you like TBS games, then this series may be worth it to you either way. They are a lot of fun with a lot of depth, but they are even more fun if you know the characters and stories that are being told -- and thats the main deciding factor. These games are pure fan service, and that alone will be the deciding factor for many. So, ask yourself. Do you like any of the series represented in these games? Then go for it if you do.

Ok, thats a lot to take in -- I know, but what about the games we do have access to here (officially)? Well, although I mentioned them all above, I figured Id include a short list here at the end for those of you who are interested in this series and would like to try the games out in some form. So, here they are:

Super Robot Taisen OG - GBA Tactical RPG, and first game in the SRWOG series.

Super Robot Taisen OG2 - GBA Tactical RPG, and second game in the SRWOG series.

Super Robot Taisen Endless Frontier - DS RPG, with the combat system from Namco X Capcom and Project X Zone, and is a story set in another world within the SRWOG series. Its also the "sequel" to NxC.

Project X Zone - 3DS Tactical RPG featuring characters from Namco, Capcom, and SEGA games. Its the follow up to Namco X Capcom and the Endless Frontier series.

Project X Zone 2 - 3DS Tactical RPG featuring characters from Namco, Capcom, SEGA, and Nintendo. Sequel to PxZ1.

Super Robot Wars OG Moon Dwellers - PS4 Tactical RPG. Released in Asia in English, and is the latest in the OG series. It features characters from Endless Frontier as well.

Super Robot Wars V - PS4 Tactical RPG. Released in Asia in English, this is the first SRW mainline game to be officially released in English, and the reason I typed this to begin with.

Well, that about covers it! For anyone who has been waiting to play a SRW game for awhile, now is your chance! And for those of you who have never played the series or any related titles (like PxZ), then you have a good starting point as well.

The Internet Dont Home without IT

The Internet Dont Home without IT

If you think it is merely foolish to leave home without your portable Internet connection then it may follow that to buy a quality home without a convincingly strong Internet connection, in 2016 is

The height of insanity

The Exclusions

- You currently dont have any Internet connections and no computers or smartphones. You are proud of being a technological neathandatal

- You are extremely old with no interest in technology and about to exit the planet

- You are living in a fantasy world where you think a large house in the country does not need an Internet connection. Just like in your parents age the quality of the staff is what is important.

- The Bible did not mention the Internet and consequently you dont need it. [Note, other religious texts are available, they also exclude any explicit reference, how strange]

In 2016 best practise would be to have

- A smartphone with an unlimited data plan, ideally for your country and all you regularly travel into

- A home Internet connection, uncapped with at least 30 and ideally over 100 Mbps downstream connection.

- If you make extensive use of Cloud Services, WebHosting ideally 100Mbps+ upstream

- For the home a backup Mobile 4G LTE connection in case the Fibre Drops

In reality

Marcus has found a property, in a really secluded location. No fibre. But with Satellite and a BT copper connection. Lets look at

Can you see the satellite latency! So using any interactive application, for example a Web Browser !!! results in a tedious user experience.

Mobile 4G LTE
With this current dismal Internet connectivity the only possible saviour would be a 4G i.e. Long Term Evolution (LTE) connection

After some hours of fiddling success:

Quite a few networks were found and some notable exceptions

Base equipment used for testing. Our trusty Asus 4G-N12

Now time to vary the position and height of the reciever

This is what happens when you run SpeedTest and each 50-100MB test download eats up your 2GB data allowance in literally minutes.

Finally a half decent result with Marcus doing some acrobatics on a rooftop. I hope the potential new neighbours dont think a crazy person is coming to stay.

Other Considerations

In the UK it might be difficult to find an uncapped PAYG or Pay Monthly plan for mobile data. Even if it says uncapped there may be a small asterisk saying, uncapped means please dont exceed 15GB per month. As a counter example, Marcus recently uploaded 7000 GB to a Cloud provider in 3 days, just as a test, at home in Switzerland. This could not be achieved in the UK via any Mobile or Land Fibre connection. Hmm. Taking a step backwards in life is always painful.

Summary
Stepping back below uncapped 100Mbit/sec download, ultra low latency Internet, is almost your only choice in the UK, is going to be a tough one. To be continued.
